TUPELO - Brian Brents hopes his Mississippi MudCats have some "turf times" this week.
The professional indoor football team, which kicks off its American Indoor Football Association season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against the Pittsburgh RiverRats at the BancorpSouth Arena, has spent its entire preseason practicing outside.
Arena workers are putting down the artificial turf and walls this week with the hope of having it in place for tonight's practice session.
"It really helps working inside with your receivers and defensive backs," said Brents, the MudCats' coach. "They know how much field they've got to cover, and they know where that wall is.
"It really defines the field and helps with the timing on pass routes. It will also be a chance to work on a field with lines."
The MudCats are also waiting on the new AIFA red, white and blue footballs to arrive.
"We haven't used the new ball," Brents said. "You want all your quarterbacks to throw them before the game."
Brents said the new balls are designed to be easier to throw.
"They are not supposed to be as slick as the ones we used last season in the NIFL," he said. "We had to sandpaper those before games."
-- In other news, the MudCats have acquired defensive tackle Tim Love, who played college ball for Harding of the Gulf South Conference.
Brents calls the 6-foot-4, 315-pound Love, who was in the San Diego Chargers preseason camp, a "beast" on the field.
However, the coach doesn't expect Love to be in the lineup Saturday.
"We're going to see what kind of shape he's in," Brents said. "A lot will depend on how quickly he learns the defense. We're probably looking at the second or third game."
-- The MudCats' games can be heard in Tupelo on WTUP-AM (1490). Other stations carrying the games will be WJWS-AM (1400) in Columbus, WKOR-AM (980) in West Point and WSSO-AM (1230) in Starkville.
