Thunderbolts Beat the Bears
05/21/07 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) Lakeland ThunderBolts
The Lakeland Thunderbolts beat the Montgomery Bears in the closest game of the season 34 - 32. The 9-2 Thunderbolts clinched first place when the Mississippi Mudcats lost to the Florence Phantoms.Montgomery (4-8) is a vastly improved team having won four of their last five games.
"My hat goes off to the Bears they are a physical team who took it to us" said Head Coach Teddy Keaton."Their defense did an excellent job keeping us off our game.Due to injuries we were forced to play younger players and move people around.I am not making any excuses injuries are part of the game.I am proud of the players they kept fighting and never gave up they knew they were going to win" Keaton said.
"The offense had an off night we just could not get in sync.I have to give credit to Coach Clayton and the Bears defense" said offensive coordinator Kenny Johnson."We just made too many mistakes. The important thing is the offense got the job done when we needed to and won the game" Johnson said.
The game opened with the Lakeland defense sacking the Bear quarterback for a safety on the first play. This was followed by one of two Kratz uno kicks. The score was 3 - 0 and 20 seconds hadn't ticked off the clock. The Bears then hunkered down and pressured the Thunderbolts. Two times Lakeland was stopped on the one yard line and had to settle for Kratz field goals.Tavoris Horton intercepted a Green pass and Thunderbolt quarterback Aso Pogi scored two plays later. For the first time this season the Thunderbolts did not score in the second quarter. With 16 seconds on the clock Montgomery quarterback Tyvon Green threw a 43 yard pass to "Spiderman" Shaun Holmes to take a 23 - 17 half time lead.
"Like the offense our defense was just not in sync.We did make some key stops and interceptions that helped us in the game" said defensive coordinator Pat Dooley.Defensive back Larry Thompson had two interceptions keeping him as the league leader.
The game went right down to the wire. A Kratz field goal with 53 seconds remaining proved to be the game winner. With the score 34 - 26 the win was assured. The Bears however fought back and with 31 seconds remaining Green threw a touchdown pass to Charlie Rollins bringing the score to 34 -32.The defense stopped the Bears two point conversion attempt.Devon Lewis recovered the Montgomery onside kick to end the game.
The Thunderbolts are on the road again this week playing the Carolina Speed on Friday night. You can catch the action on the AIFA web cast just go to the Thunderbolt website and click on the AIFA icon.Lakeland returns home on June 2nd for the finial home game. This will be fan appreciation night with many events being planned including a half time celebration for THOR who will be celebrating his birthday.
