Demolition drops home opener
Danville drops to 0-2 in AIFA
BY LISA MARTIN
DANVILLE — Area residents have a new past time as the city of Danville welcomed the Danville Demolition to the David S. Palmer Arena on Friday night.
The Danville Demolition is a member of the American Indoor Football Association.
Unfortunately, the result of the game wasn’t what the hometown crowd was hoping for as the Demolition fell to the Johnstown Riverhawks 39-16.
“The town, community and county came out and supported the team,” Demolition coach B.J. Luke said. “The kids felt good about that. We’re excited with the turnout, enthusiasm and electricity here tonight.
“We’re a young team and if people will be patient with us, then we’ll get better every week. As we get better, the crowds will get better,” Luke said.
The Demolition won the coin toss and scored on the opening drive of the game on a quarterback sneak by Willie Davis. Phil Cunningham kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0.
That was the only lead that Danville would have as the Riverhawks scored 36 unanswered points. The Demolition trailed 27-10 at halftime.
“We felt good about our front play; our offensive line, which struggled last week, had three good quarters of play. We did a good job up front of protecting our quarterback,” Luke said.
Quenteen Robinson and Michael Caputo each scored two touchdowns for the Riverhawks, Michael Feeney and Terrance Hudson each added one touchdown.
“R.J. Luke was solid catching the football and made some big plays. We need to get more consistent in the inside receiver spots. We have a lot of new kids in those positions and we’re all learning the nuances of this game, myself and a ssistants included,” B.J. Luke said.
As lopsided as the final score may appear, the game was full of action, play bounced back and forth between the teams.
There isn’t any punting in indoor football, so teams either try for a first down, a touchdown or a field goal on fourth down. If they fail to make any of the aforementioned, the ball is turned over on downs and the other team takes over.
Indoor football is more of a throwing game and not a running game, which could result in a high-scoring game or a lot of incomplete passes. The latter is what happened in Friday’s matchup.
“As they get better and realize what they’re doing we’re gonna get better. This is a little different game for all of us. It’s a neat experience,” Coach Luke said.
The Demolition (0-2) will travel to Pittsburgh on Thursday. The next home game is on March 9 when the Demolition will host Pittsburgh.
