The Erie Freeze might be gone, but they're not forgotten. Not in Flint, Mich., anyway.
The Freeze's turf, still bearing the team's logo, served as the playing surface for Sunday's Continental Indoor Football League debut of the Flint Phantoms. Not surprisingly -- given the Freeze's bumpy ride most of the past two years in Erie -- things didn't go smoothly.
According to The Flint Journal, the start of the game was delayed for two hours while crews tamped down wrinkles in the carpet. A goal post fell from a hoist and broke, further delaying kickoff.
Some things are funny enough without a punch line.

wow that is hilarious.
perani arena is a hockey facility first and foremost, and they needed a bigger field than most cifl venues need (most aren't in hockey arenas) but to be that desperate to buy the freeze turf, wow. just wow.
thing is, they had professional indoor soccer there and told the pirates last season they had brand new turf for them to use if they moved to flint... one of the promises evidently not kept.
aifa and cifl are really battling it out to see who runs the biggest goofball league aren't they...

It was a riot reading that this morning.
I'd love to know what they paid for it.
And Peorias' turf was in Danville last season.
It could have been their old turf, but it did say Peoria Pirates in the end zones and also was their colors, Black and White.

They paid $1,500 for it. Ron Desser at the Tullio told me.

They should have went to Lowes to get the indoor/outdoor green carpet.... They could have gotten more than enough for 3000 bucks.

The Flint franchise is a total wreck and it doesn't surprise me that they'd buy the Freeze turf. NOBODY should be using that turf.
As for the Demos using the Peoria Pirates' turf, it was actually in good condition, I thought, when I was there last year for a Rats game.

I'll have to contact the Flint Phantoms front office. I have a bunch of junk in my garage i could sell them real cheap.

well the riverrats play on the Osceola Ghostriders turf from last year. To have hated the 'wifl' the way most of you did I'm surprised they didn't atleast paint it.
point is most of our turf's are used.
Columbus uses one from their af2 days and its condition for 2 years is very poor. If we had delayed the game to get the turf layed down right in areas there just simply would not be a game

Last year the RiverRats used turf from the Norfolk Knights. It didnt even fit the rink, we had to use patches in the corners which looked hideous and slid around. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

Norfolk Nighthawks, actually turfburn.
But yeah, that's the problem with 'used' turf. Almost every indoor team is using old AFL/AF2 turf, or other indoor team turf (which can vary greatly on quality).
At least AFL/AF2 turf has certain requirements for quality, look, etc. But even after a few years and several paint jobs, it can really look like nuts.

Speaking of old teams' turf resurfacing in new places.....
I was surprised to see the Johnstown RiverHawks Musser Forests Field being put to good use in 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore last night!
The turf is only a couple of years old and still in very good condition!
I'm just glad that the RiverRats fared better than the Freeze did when they played on that rug in Johnstown!
