It is currently one down and six to go in the District 10 high school football coaching carousel.
Of the seven schools seeking new coaches, Oil City became the first to fill its job when it hired Matt LaVerde last week.
LaVerde, who was the offensive coordinator at Franklin under Dave Smith, is a 1993 Oil City grad. After playing for the Oilers, he was a walk-on at Penn State before transferring to Mount Union. LaVerde played on the Purple Eagles' 1998 and 2000 Division III championship teams, was an all-Ohio Athletic Conference linebacker and academic all-star.
"It's a great honor to be back at the school I started at," LaVerde said. "When I played at Oil City, Paul Stamm was the head coach and Bill Heber was the defensive coordinator," he said about the past two Oilers head coaches.
LaVerde, who is a math teacher at Rocky Grove, spent two seasons as an assistant to his older brother Tiger at Franklin. After one year at Washington and Jefferson, he returned to Franklin to assist Smith.
"I plan on running the offense that Tiger and I used at Franklin, and the defense of Fred Blackhurst, who coached at Franklin," Matt LaVerde said.
A year ago, Matt LaVerde quarterbacked the Erie Freeze for two games, and Tiger LaVerde - currently the coach at Kirtland, Ohio - played wide receiver in the final game of the season.
Here is the status of the other six schools that have openings for head coaches, according to the athletic directors at each school:
McDowell: Rumors have persisted that an offer already has been made to a coach. But the official word is that interviews are being conducted to replace Joe Tarasovitch, and the committee has a goal of presenting a candidate to the board Feb. 25.
East: The posting for the job came down Monday. There is no timetable to replace Mo Troop.
Northwestern: A second round of interviews has begun. A replacement for Jamie Cipalla could be named at the Feb. 19 board meeting.
Conneaut Valley: The school is in the process of interviewing coaches and would like to have one approved at the Feb. 13 meeting.
Conneaut Lake: The process of conducting interviews has begun with the hope to have a candidate to replace Ray Collins at the Feb. 13 board meeting.
Warren: Interviews have been conducted for a successor to Brandon Falk, but there is no timetable for a decision.
