After a phone call on Tuesday. Secky had quit as the Freeze QB. So a friend of Dave Smith came to practice on Wednesday. His name is Matt LaVerde. His name may sound familiar. He played QB for Penn State(not Behrend). He made an immediate impression in practice for the rest of the week. His performance this past Saturday was great. Only one interception. Compared to Secky's six. And this guy is mobile too. He transfered to Mount Union and played LB there. So the guy can take a hit. Future QB for Erie?.............I hope so.

Good, now lets work on that secondary which is so bad I can pass on them and I suck at QB.

I can see why this was Top Secret news. Someone might have gone out and found game tape from when La Verde was a walk-on QB with Penn State in 1996 (Google is wonderful).
It would have made a good story for the press too -- I could see the headline: "Freeze Make QB Change, Try to Halt Skid" -- instead it was kept totally hush-hush, and nobody managed to even phone the newspaper about the offensive explosion and final score. Two days later is it still news? Maybe someone can still get out a press release/story to the media about the change to try to generate some buzz about the game against Mississippi.

Buzz against Mississippi? Come on. It's Memorial Day weekend. Unless the weather sucks, no one will be at the game.

OK. So maybe I was reaching on the "creating buzz" part.
Anyway, someone asked about any info for LaVerde on another thread, but I thought I'd put them on this one instead.
From what I can piece together off of Google, LaVerde was a walk-on with Penn State as a Freshman (1996) when he was listed as 6'1", 204 lbs. He was red-shirted sophomore year. I believe after that was when he transferred to Mount Union College, where he switched to defense and played at outside linebacker. I couldn't find any offensive stats -- could it be he never played QB in an actual game during his college career?
Either way he seems like a much better QB than Secky. Maybe he can do the ironman thing and play defense too.

I hope this guy is for real. I will be paying close attention to this game because we need Erie to beat Mississippi. Our playoff seed depends on it. Let's go LaVerde.
