CANTON, Ohio -- The Erie Freeze, with first-year quarterback Randall Secky intercepted three times in his indoor football debut, faced the wrong team to open their American Indoor Football Association season Friday night.
The defending champion Canton Legends took advantage of four Freeze turnovers, and quarterback Kevin Mason ran for three touchdowns as the Legends rolled to a 43-26 victory before 2,000 fans at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.
Secky, a former University at Buffalo quarterback, completed 11-of-23 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, but the turnovers proved costly.
"We have a lot of inexperience, and it showed," Freeze coach Dave Arnold said. "Randall started, and found out that the game is a lot faster than what he is used to. It was like that for our first-year guys."
The Legends (2-0) scored the first 15 points, beginning with a rouge on the opening kickoff by former Freeze kicker J.R. Cipra. Mason ran one yard for a touchdown, and JoJo Polk took an interception 48 yards for a touchdown.
Darmel Whitfield, who stepped in at QB after the pick, connected with veteran receiver Manny Johnson for scoring passes of 19 and 6 yards, but the Legends led 22-14 at halftime. Secky threw touchdown passes to Kevin Scott (15 yards) and Whitfield (18), but the Freeze never threatened the champions, who are 4-0 at home vs. Erie in three seasons.
"I think we had opening-game jitters, but the positive thing is we have a lot to build on," Arnold said. "We should be a lot better when we open at home next week against Danville, a first-year team in the league."
