American Cancer Society looking to break world record
By Dave Lavender
The Herald-Dispatch
HUNTINGTON -- Last year, the Cabell County chapter of the American Cancer Society won a national award for one of its events.
This year, they're shooting for a world record and should have a pretty good time doing it.
At the Huntington Heroes indoor football game Feb. 17 vs. Canton at
7 p.m. at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena, the Cancer Society hopes to break the Guinness World Book of Records mark for the most people simultaneously wearing Groucho Marx glasses.
Terri Francis, the income manager for the Cancer Society in Cabell County, thinks they can shatter the record, which stands at 1,485.
Folks can pick up the glasses at the door for $5 and they can also buy them before the game from any of the Relay for Life teams, including St. Mary's Medical Center and Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Tickets to the Heroes game are $9.50 to $24.40. Kids age 12 and under get in for half price.
They hope to easily break the record by stuffing the Arena full of good-hearted fans, or in the words of Groucho himself, "Room Service? Send up a larger room."
"I would like to see us have 5,000 people so we can hold the world record for a while," Francis said.
All proceeds from the world record breaking stunt will go to the Relay For Life.
Last year, the Relay for Life raised more than $170,000 and won a national award for having the most cancer survivors per capita attending (655).
The goal for this year's Relay for Life is $200,000.
Francis said she got the idea from a friend in Berkeley County in the Eastern Panhandle where they tried but failed to break the record.
"I want to put Cabell County and West Virginia on the map," Francis said. "I appreciate the Huntington Heroes doing this. We're really excited about doing it."
It wouldn't be the first time that a West Virginia crowd has made it in the Guinness World Book of Records.
Last year, Mattel, the makers of the card game UNO came to Charleston, since West Virginia is the 35th state, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of UNO by breaking the world records for the world's largest card game tournament.
The game drew 330 people, breaking the previous record of 320 players who played the game of Quadrille in Portugal.
