The Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) regretfully announces the indefinite suspension of operations of the Steubenville and Summit County franchises.
“We’re obviously disappointed that we have to make this decision, but it’s a step that has to be taken to ensure the stability of this league,” said CIFL co-founder Jeff Spitaleri. “This is in the best interest of the league and all its member teams.”
Steubenville was in its second year of operation, but both franchises were in their first year of membership in the CIFL. Steubenville finished the year with a 5-7 record, while Summit County finished the year 1-11.
“Each franchise failed to meet league requirements and it would be unfair to the other teams in this league to let them continue to operate,” continued Spitaleri. “At some point, you just have to take a stand and make a decision, and this is that stand.”
“I’d also like to say that I personally apologize to the fans of each of these teams,” noted Spitaleri. “It’s unfair to those fans, but we have to do what is best for this league.”
When asked about the possibility of putting another organization in the Steubenville and Summit County markets, Spitaleri said, “it’s something we would examine if a solid ownership group stepped to the plate.”

CIFL announces suspension of Springfield
Friday, 22 June 2007
The Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) regretfully announces the indefinite suspension of operations of the Springfield organization. The league had assumed full control of the organization earlier this week.
“We don’t like having to do this, but it’s something we’ve got to do at this point,” said CIFL co-founder Jeff Spitaleri. “There have been problems all year with the Stallions and we can’t run the risk of them not showing up to their scheduled game this weekend.”
Springfield did not show up to a scheduled game last week in Marion. The backup plan in place by the league also did not work, leaving Marion without the chance to play a scheduled game at home.
“What happened last week was unfortunate for everyone involved, especially for the fans, players, coaches and owners in Marion,” noted Spitaleri. “We had to take over the team and the risk level is just too high for us to try to keep them alive for the remainder of the season.”
Springfield is scheduled to travel to Chicago on Sunday, June 24.
“We believe it is in our best interest as a league to suspend the operations of the organization, effective immediately,” continued Spitaleri. “In order to keep the integrity of Chicago’s schedule, we’re going to allow for another team to take the place of the Stallions.”
Chicago’s scheduled game on Sunday, June 24, will now be played against the Capital City Outlaws. The Outlaws are based in Springfield, Ill. and are an outdoor team that plays in the 8FL, where they won the league championship this past season.
Chicago has locked up the third seed in the Great Lakes Division playoffs and will face the division’s sixth seed in the first round of the playoffs.
“The integrity of our schedule is important,” said Chicago General Manager Alan Perkins. “We trust in the guys running this league and we know that they are going to do what’s best for every team in this league.”
“I think it’s pretty obvious that we don’t want to have to do things like this,” said Spitaleri. “But, in the long run, this is the best move for this league and all the teams in it.”
“We should have taken a more active approach with the Springfield organization and that is on our shoulders,” continued Spitaleri. “We have to take these steps to ensure that what happened this past weekend doesn’t happen again.”
