RiverRats and Unity...
A Journey Home, Team Up to Help the Terminally-Ill
The Pittsburgh RiverRats, of the American Indoor Football Association, have joined up with Unity, A Journey Home, a hospice house located in Vanderbilt, PA, to grant one of the last wishes of a special football fan with a terminal illness.
The patient, John, is 57 years old, and has end-stage kidney cancer. One of his last wishes is to attend an indoor football game in person. A lifelong sports fan, John has witnessed many types of sporting events in person, but never indoor football.
On Friday, May 25, the Pittsburgh RiverRats and the Rostraver Ice Gardens Arena will help make John’s wish come true, when he will be in attendance as the Special Fan of the Game, as the Pittsburgh RiverRats host the Huntington Heroes in their last regular-season game of the season which has been designated as Fan Appreciation Night. His introduction to the RiverRats will begin on Thursday afternoon with a visit from Head Coach Shawn Liotta and several players.
Unity, A Journey Home is a residential hospice, which caters to a maximum of 2-3 residents at any time, allowing for more specialized and personalized care. John and Bobbi Robinson, proprietors of the hospice, hope that this event will be the jumpstart to their dream: “We are planning now for the start of a new nonprofit organization, that grants last wishes to terminally ill adults in the greater Pittsburgh area. The name is going to be Unity, A Journey of Hope. This wonderful blessing provided to us by the Pittsburgh RiverRats just solidifies for us the need to continue on that path.” said John Robinson.
“You have no idea how thankful we are that the RiverRats were willing to help this man. We told John of the upcoming game this week and he smiled from ear to ear, something we have not seen in a long time. We are truly blessed.”
In celebration of Fan Appreciation Night, all sideline and gridiron circle tickets purchased before the game at the arena will be discounted to $5 each. The Pittsburgh RiverRats will be setting up donation areas throughout the arena, and are encouraging all of its fans in attendance and throughout the Mon Valley to help support this most worthy cause.

Somehow, Football just doesn't seem as important today as it was yesterday. John, you are in our hearts and prayers......
