IFL expecting 28 teams, including Tri-Cities By Brian Adamowsky World sports writer Thursday, September 9, 2010 WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley Venom are in final negotiations to move from the American Indoor Football League (AIFA) to the Indoor Football League (IFL), team president Kyle Skalisky confirmed Wednesday from Chicago, the site of the IFL’s annual meeting. A formal announcement is expected from the Venom as early as this weekend, Skalisky said. The IFL is expecting to field 28 teams for the 2011 season, a group that includes the Tri-Cities Fever, which will set up as a local rival for the Venom. There also are rumblings that the Yakima Valley Warriors could follow the Venom to the IFL. If that happens, it’s likely that the Venom, Warriors and Fever would be in the same division to cut down on the travel costs that were taxing to the Venom in the AIFA last season. The Wyoming Cavalry and the Reading (Pa.) Express, two of the top AIFA teams the past few seasons, have already announced moves to the IFL. Owners and general managers of current and prospective IFL teams will meet in Chicago through Friday to organize the setup for the season, which begins in February. Wenatchee Valley was 8-6 in its inaugural season in the AIFA, winning their final six games after head coach Brian Smith took over the team, falling just shy of an improbable playoff berth.
