Baltimore Colts Legend Lenny Moore Honorary Captain for National Title Game
BALTIMORE, MD (July 22, 2010) – Fans attending AIFA Bowl IV, pitting the Baltimore Mariners (15-0) against the Wyoming Cavalry (14-1) at 1st Mariner Arena on Sunday, July 25th at 4:00 PM, will be treated to fast, furious, and fun football action, as well as, great contests, entertainment, giveaways, and prizes. The Wyoming Cavalry, however, will play in an arena that has been less than hospitable to opposing teams.
Playing home at 1st Mariner Arena the Mariners are 8-0 this season, have won 12 in a row in Baltimore, have a 14-1 record in Charm City the last two seasons, and are 18-2 dating back to May 2008 on their home field.
In 2010 Baltimore indoor football fans were treated to the first shutout in American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) history when the Mariners over-ran the Fayetteville Guard 59-0, a stirring 49-45 win over the Richmond Raiders secured by a goal line stand in the waning moments of the game, and a 78-point win, 84-6 over the New Jersey Revolution.
In addition the Mariners beat playoff teams (Harrisburg and Erie) and the defending champions by an average margin of victory of 33 points in four games at 1st Mariner Arena this season (50-17, 51-34, 69-35, and 63-15).
Aside from the competition on the field Baltimore’s opponents have faced Mariner fans, known as Mariner Maniacs, who have provided a decided “9th Man” advantage and with a record crowd expected this weekend, the Cavalry could face an additional challenge.
Baltimore Mariners General Manager Greg Justice noted, “I have played at 1st Mariner Arena both as an opponent and as a Mariner. This year is the loudest and proudest I have ever seen the Mariner faithful. I am very excited to see this growth and where it will continue to go from here! This is our home and we truly have gained a 9th man and home field advantage.”
This weekend the Mariners have several treats in store for their dedicated fans. The Mariners are proud to have Baltimore Colts legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame great Lenny Moore serve as honorary captain for the national championship game. The last time Baltimore hosted a football league championship game was in 1959 at Memorial Stadium. In that game Moore started off the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown reception from Johnny Unitas and the Colts went on to win their second straight NFL title.
In 12 seasons with the Baltimore Colts Moore was a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time First Team All-Pro. He finished his career with over 12,000 combined net yards and led the Colts to three NFL title games and two world championships (1958 and 1959). Moore was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1975.
The first 2,000 fans who enter 1st Mariner will also receive a Commemorative AIFA Bowl IV Poster and Roster Card. Before the action on the field gets started the 70th Intelligence Reconnaissance and Surveillance Base Honor Guard will serve as the Guest Honor Guard for the national championship game. Also, the Heel Tappin' Hot Notes from Patapsco High School will perform the National Anthem.
In addition to performances by the Baltimore Mariners Cheerleaders during pre-game and throughout the game, fans will be entertained at halftime by the Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. The Jing Ying Instituted provides a three ring style performance with Kung Fu forms and Lion Dance and a Tai Chai demonstration.
With a packed entertainment schedule and the AIFA’s top two teams, Sunday’s national championship game will provide fast, furious and fun football action and entertainment for everyone.
