One Game and One Championship to Win
BALTIMORE, MD (July 22, 2010) - It all comes down to one game. The accumulation of all the hours of film study, work outs and practice amount to one game. All of the hard work, sacrifice and dedication comes down to one game; the 2010 AIFA National Championship. For some, it is the first time ever playing in a title game. For others, it’s nothing new. But, for all, it’s the crowning achievement of a successful season.
Funny, after a great practice last night, I awoke this morning feeling a little restless and unsatisfied. As I was waking up, I sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing my hands together. I saw the ring on my left hand that symbolizes how great my private/personal life is. Then it hit me...I won't rest until we have a RING on the other hand.
Colin Powell once stated, “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude." We have taken each game one at a time this season. Our focus has been simple; get better as individuals, and as a team, and the results of the game will take care of itself. We don’t make the games any bigger than they are. The same goes for this one. It doesn’t make the championship any less exciting however it does put it into perspective.
I’ve used this quote by Tom Landry a few times but, it really defines our philosophy on how we built this team and our mentality. Coach Landry stated, "A team that has character doesn't need stimulation. If you are prepared, you will be confident, and will do the job. Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is a great game. Even though it is my business, I am still a big fan. As a coach, I love the preparation that goes into putting a game plan together. I love the “Cussing and Discussing” sessions that take place during the coaches meetings. I love the implementation.
We all have our critics. There are those who take great pleasure in your failures and those who proclaim how “lucky” you are when you are successful. Respect commands itself and it can neither be given nor withheld when it is due. It must be taken through the collective efforts of those who strive for excellence. That has been our motto this season: “Take Your Respect”. Thomas Jefferson said it well when he stated, "We confide in our strength, without boasting of it; we respect that of others, without fearing it."
Wyoming has a tremendous football team. It is a first class organization that is very well coached and has very few weaknesses. They are a challenge that we are very much looking forward to. The two best teams in the league will face off for the AIFA Championship with a combined loss total of one. How can you not get excited about this? I know we are. See you Sunday, 4 pm, at 1st Mariner Arena.
