MARINERS DOMINATE STAMPEDE TO ADVANCE TO AIFA BOWL IV
BALTIMORE, MD (July 14, 2010) – For the first time since 1959, the city of Baltimore will play host to a professional football championship. The Baltimore Mariners have advanced to the AIFA Championship Bowl IV defeating the Harrisburg Stampede 63-15, claiming the Eastern Conference Championship. Excitement was in the air in Charm City, as Mariner fans crowded the lobby at the 1st Mariner Arena armed with cowbells, horns, and thunder sticks. Both the Mariners and the Stampede arrived with fire in their eyes, ready to do battle for a trip to the championship game. As it has been the case this season with all teams in the Eastern Conference, once again, the Mariner Way prevailed. From start to finish, the Stampede felt the wrath of our league leading defense and our high flying offense. Now there is no doubt, and we can say our Baltimore Mariners are the very best in the AIFA Eastern Conference. The exams are in; let’s see how the Mariners did in the Eastern Conference Championship game against the Stampede.
OFFENSE: A-
The Baltimore Mariners offense continues to score on anyone and everyone, and the Stampede defense was no exception. The passing game was the main highlight of the Mariners offense for this game, as they knew it would be tough to run against the Stampede run defense. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth had another outstanding day, passing for 228 yards and five touchdowns. Both Jamaal Stokes and Aaron Yarbough were stars at the wide receiver position. Yarbough was the favorite target of Nemeth, catching eight passes for 95 yards and one touchdown. Stokes caught four passes for an impressive 98 yards and two touchdowns. Scorpio Brown and Richard Johnson also reached the end zone thanks to the arm of Nemeth.
DEFENSE: B+
The Mariners defense can be summed up in one word; outstanding. Baltimore’s defense forced turnovers and did not allow Harrisburg to open up any part of their offense. The Mariners’ pass defense was stingy, allowing just 135 yards from four different Harrisburg quarterbacks. Mariners’ defensive back Richard Johnson recorded two interceptions, while Desmond Maul, Armar Watson, and David Smith each added to the interception total. Jermaine Thaxton, like he did in the regular season opener against the Stampede, added the final exclamation point with a safety. If the Mariners defense can play this way in the AIFA Championship Bowl, no one will be able to pass on this outstanding defense.
SPECIAL TEAMS: A
Clutch kicking and forcing opponents in terrible field position is what makes J.R. Cipra the best kicker in the AIFA. Cipra has made a habit of scoring, and the AIFA Eastern Conference Championship game was no exception. Cipra booted three unos and three field goals at distances of 21, 55, and 38 yards. The Mariners special teams also capitalized on a Eugene Goodman fumble, as Adam Goloboski told Goodman with a vicious tackle that he will have no chance of recovering this fumble. Scorpio Brown managed to recover the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
This is it, Mariner fans! The two very best in the AIFA will meet at the 1st Mariner Arena in beautiful downtown Baltimore for the right to call themselves AIFA Champions. This time, the Mariners will welcome in the Wyoming Cavalry, the 2010 AIFA Western Conference Champions. The ring is in sight, Mariner fans, we just need to reach up and grab it from destiny’s hand.
