E.J. Nemeth threw two touchdown passes in the final minute of the first half to help the Baltimore Mariners end the Reading Express' season Saturday night with a 69-35 victory at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore.
The Express, the defending American Indoor Football Association champion, needed to defeat the Mariners to earn its fifth straight playoff berth.
Rob Flowers threw a touchdown pass to Dan Kelly with one minute left in the first half to help the Express (8-6) close within three points at 22-19.
But the Mariners (14-0) scored a touchdown on the first play after the kickoff. Following an Express turnover, Baltimore struck again before the half to take a 36-19 lead into the locker room.
Reading started the second half the same way it opened the game, registering a safety when the ball was snapped over the head of Nemeth on a field-goal try. The Express blocked a field goal in the first quarter for a safety.
Following the safety to open the second half, Flowers hit Nate Romig for a touchdown that closed the gap to 36-27.
But that was as close as the Express got.
Isaiah Grier ran for three touchdowns as the Mariners pulled away to become the first team in league history to finish an undefeated regular season.
The loss prevented the Express from advancing to the playoffs for the first time in its five-year history.
Erie, which also went 8-6, claimed the third and final playoff spot in the East Division by virtue of winning two of three games against the Express this season.
Erie will open the AIFA playoffs next weekend at No. 2 seed Harrisburg.
Reading opened the game strong, taking a 5-0 lead when Matt Sola blocked a field-goal attempt out of the end zone and Erik Rockhold followed with a field goal.
