Mariners Can Finish Regular Season Undefeated with Win over Conference Rival
BALTIMORE, MD (June 24, 2010) – Merriam-Webster defines rival as “one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess.” So far in the Baltimore Mariners-Reading Express rivalry it has been Reading who has possessed the regular season titles, the playoff wins, and the league championship. The Mariners hope to change that; starting with a win over the Express this Saturday.
“This is Reading's playoff game. All the pressure is on them to win and get into the post season. They have set the bar for the league as a whole and this is our opportunity to step in and show that the Mariners are a quality organization as well. Reading knocked us out of the playoffs last season. We don't need any more incentive to beat them than that,” said Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson.
In the 2008 season, while the Mariners were going 4-10 in their first season, the 10-4 Express defeated the Mariners in all three regular season match-ups, won the regular season division title for the third straight season, and made it to the conference championship game.
In 2009 it appeared the tide was turning as the Mariners took both regular season contests with the Express and finished the regular season 9-5; just two games behind 11-3 Reading. The Express flexed their muscle again, however, routing Baltimore 50-20 in the first round of the playoffs and captured the ultimate prize, the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) title.
Now the Mariners stand ready to truly become the new kings of the hill in the AIFA. In week six of the 2010 season they throttled the Express 51-27 to win their third straight regular season match-up over Reading. With their 13-0 start the Mariners have ended the Express’ four year reign on the regular season crown and now with a win this weekend they can not only become the first team in league history to finish a season undefeated, but can also run Reading out of playoff contention.
Even with 13 wins under his belt this season Coach Simpson is still applying the one game at a time approach that has proved fruitful for the Mariners this season, “Our focus is to win a football game. Should we beat Reading, we will be the first team in league history to finish the regular season undefeated. We have come a long ways since the 2008 season, and even 2009. We simply need to finish what we have started.”
The Mariners hope to take the upper hand in their rivalry with Reading when they take on the Express Saturday, June 26th at 7:00 PM at 1st Mariner Arena. Whatever the outcome of the Reading game the Mariners will take on a conference rival in the Eastern Conference Championship on July 10th at 7:00 PM at 1st Mariner Arena; with the winner of that game hosting the AIFA championship. If the Mariners take that final game of the season they can truly claim the upper hand in their rivalry with Reading and the rest of the AIFA.
