MARINERS USE SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL TO RUN RECORD TO 13-0
BALTIMORE, MD (June 21, 2010) – The Mariners wrapped up their season series against the New Jersey Revolution the same way they started their series with New Jersey; in dominating fashion. The Mariners ran their record to 13-0 last Saturday night thanks to an 84-6 victory over the winless Revolution at the 1st Mariner Arena. The Mariners running attack and defense was on full force this Saturday dominating the Revolution. Once again, Baltimore football fans were treated to good ‘ol fashion, in-your-face, Baltimore smash mouth football. The exams are in; let’s see how the Mariners did in their victory over the Revolution.
OFFENSE: A
Mariners’ running back Isaiah Grier proves time and time again to be the very best running back in the AIFA. Thanks to his ability and shifty running, he was able to maintain great clock control and put up some outstanding numbers in the process. Grier rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns against the New Jersey defense. While it is difficult enough to run in arena football, Grier just seems to have a natural ability to find the hole and create running room with his speed and strength. Credit must also be given to the entire Mariners offensive line for creating the holes Grier has to bust through for big gains. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth also joined the rushing touchdown party, as he ran for two scores on the ground. Nemeth also had a great day through the air, passing for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Aaron Yarbough led all receivers with six receptions for 85 yards and three touchdowns. Special shout out to backup quarterback Matt Folke, who passed for two touchdowns as well.
DEFENSE: A+
The Swashbuckler defense was at it again, forcing turnovers and making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. Mariners’ defensive coordinator Steve Gaunt looked on with great pride, as his defense allowed just 20 yards of total offense from the Revolution. The Mariners also forced five turnovers; four interceptions and one forced fumble. Desmond Maul led the interception party with two picks, Armar Watson and David Smith, who picked off his first pass as a Baltimore Mariner, each had interceptions. Fearon Wright returned a fumble for a touchdown as well, his first touchdown in the AIFA. Daniel Orlebar continued the defensive onslaught, with a safety.
SPECIAL TEAMS: A
Mariners’ kicker J.R. Cipra had a great day kicking, booting two unos and a 47 yard field goal. New Jersey kicker Geoff Wolyniec made a critical mistake in this game, and that mistake was kicking the ball to Armar Watson. He nearly returned a kickoff for a touchdown, taking the ball inside the five yard line on an outstanding 55 yard kickoff return.
The Mariners make the Dwayne’s List for another outstanding football game. One more win, and we finish the season undefeated, but the task doesn’t get any easier. The Mariners welcome in their rivals, the Reading Express who are fighting for their playoff lives. What better way to end the season with an undefeated regular season and knocking Reading out the playoffs.
