BALTIMORE CLINCHES EASTERN CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP
BALTIMORE, MD (June 8, 2010) – The next, all important step in the Mariners quest for the AIFA Championship took place last Saturday night at the 1st Mariner Arena. High fives, hugs, tears, and Gatorade showers were shared in Baltimore, as the Mariners defeated the Erie Storm 51-34 to clinch their first AIFA Eastern Conference Regular Season Championship. With this great honor, the Mariners will host the Eastern Conference Championship playoff in Baltimore on July 10th, and an all-important bye week in the playoffs. Fans continue to be amazed by this outstanding football team, and their never-say-die attitude. The Mariners were tested by a very good Erie football team, but the Mariner Way once again prevailed. The exams are in; let’s see how the Mariners did in their big win against the Storm.
OFFENSE: B+
The Mariners offense ran and passed the ball very well in their victory over a good Erie defense. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth had a solid day, passing for three touchdowns and 81 yards through the air. Aaron Yarbough was the star of the Mariners receiving corps, catching four passes for 62 yards and one touchdown, including a beautiful 44 yard bomb in the corner of the end zone. Isaiah Grier also had a very solid day on the ground, rushing for 32 yards and two touchdowns. The Mariners offense continues to be high flying and high scoring.
DEFENSE: A+
Not since the days of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens have football fans in Charm City been treated to such a dominating defense. The run defense especially, has been stifling this season, and last Saturday the trend continued, only allowing five rushing yards. The Mariners defensive backfield enjoyed another statement game, and that statement was you have to account for all of us. Defensive backs Jermaine Thaxton and Armar Watson each broke up two passes and had a pick apiece. Richard Johnson continues to show great courage playing through a nagging hand injury, but that didn’t stop him as he returned an interception for a touchdown. Even defensive lineman Melik Brown joined in on the interception party, and linebacker Adam Goloboski had another defensive touchdown. The Swashbucklers strike again!
SPECIAL TEAMS: B
Mariners’ kicker J.R. Cipra got off to a hot start, booting two straight unos early on the game. He would continue that trend, booting every single extra point against his former team. Armar Watson can not only burn receivers in the defensive back field, but he is also a shifty returner, and his 46 yard kickoff return helped out the Mariners with great field position for the offense.
The Mariners head out on the road for the final time this season, making a trip up to Erie to exercise some demons and keep their perfect season intact. Mariner fans can catch the game live on our UStream account.
