BALTIMORE DEFEATS RICHMOND TO CLINCH 2ND STRAIGHT PLAYOFF BERTH
BALTIMORE, MD (June 2, 2010) – Not even a little bus-lag could stop the Baltimore Mariners and their quest for the AIFA Championship. Last Saturday night, they got a little closer to that dream by defeating the Richmond Raiders 57-39 clinching their 2nd straight playoff berth. The Mariners also set a new AIFA record for most consecutive wins (10) last Saturday night.
The Mariners arrived focused and determined to knock off the Raiders, who gave them a run for their money earlier this season. On the very first drive, the Mariners scored thanks to a touchdown pass from E.J. Nemeth to Scorpio Brown, which would be a recurring theme all game long. The defense held the Richmond offense, which ranked 3rd in the AIFA coming into this game, and created some very key turnovers that the offense capitalized on throughout the course of the game. The special teams were, as usual, stellar and very accurate. Once again, a complete team effort to ensure another victory for the Baltimore Mariners. The exams are in; let’s see how the Mariners did in their game against the Raiders.
OFFENSE: A
The Mariners 3rd ranked scoring offense did just that; score and scored frequently on a very good Raiders defense. Mariners quarterback E.J. Nemeth, once again, was stellar making his mark as the best quarterback in the AIFA. Nemeth finished the day with six passing touchdowns, one to Armar Watson, one to running back Isaiah Grier and four to wide receiver Scorpio Brown. Brown, who is from the Newport News area, impressed the Richmond crowd with his blinding speed and his bravado on, and off, the field. Grier not only excelled as a receiver in this game, but as usual he burned defenders on the ground, racking up 40 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
DEFENSE: A
Once again, the Mariners defense made life miserable for another opposing offense. The Mariners number one rushing defense allowed an astounding three yards on the ground from the Raiders rushing offense, which ranked 5th in the AIFA coming into this game. Richmond quarterback Robbie Jenkins was abused and rushed all game long by the Mariners defensive line, which led to turnovers. The Mariners forced four turnovers, including three interceptions from Jermaine Thaxton, Adam Goloboski, and Desmond Maul, and a fumble. Forcing turnovers and not budging an inch; that’s the Swashbuckler defense of the Baltimore Mariners.
SPECIAL TEAMS: A-
Another great performance from J.R. Cipra and the Mariners’ special teams unit. Cipra booted two field goals from both 26 and 36 yards. The most accurate kicker in the AIFA also booted an uno through the uprights on a kickoff. The coverage was outstanding, as they did not allow Richmond returner Jay Jackson past mid field.
The Mariners head back to Baltimore for Mustache Night at the 1st Mariner Arena, and looking to defeat the Erie Storm for the number one seed in the AIFA eastern division.
