Despite Bye, Baltimore Can Clinch Second Straight Playoff Berth this Weekend
BALTIMORE, MD (May 19, 2010) – Back in January when Baltimore Mariners General Manager Greg Justice was asked about the team’s goals for the 2010 season he said, “The mission is simple! Take care of business, get to the post season and bring that championship game to Baltimore!” Now the Mariners are on the verge of reaching one of those goals: making the playoffs.
As the Mariners (9-0) enjoy a bye this weekend they will still have their eyes on some American Indoor Football Association’s (AIFA) action. Baltimore can clinch their second straight playoff berth with a loss this week by the Reading Express (5-5).
A loss by the defending AIFA champs would guarantee Baltimore, and its nine wins, one of three East Conference playoff spots.
Reading heads to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to face the 6-2 Stampede on Saturday night. It has already been a tumultuous week as the Express announced “upon mutual agreement” Bernie Nowotarski, was stepping down as General Manager and Head Coach of the team he led to the AIFA championship in 2009. Offensive Coordinator Chris Thompson will take over as interim head coach.
The Express lost 55-42, in Reading, to Harrisburg in week three of the season. They also lost last week to Richmond at home, 40-39, to take their fifth loss of the season, the most in franchise history.
If Reading wins this weekend the Mariners can clinch their tenth win and second playoff spot with a win at Richmond on May 29th. With their magic number at one the Mariners can also clinch a playoff spot with just one more win this season or one Reading loss the rest of the season.
None of the seven East Conference teams, including 0-8 New Jersey, have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
Heading into this weekend’s play there are still four teams that have a mathematical chance of winning the conference title. The Mariners can eliminate Reading with a Mariners win or an Express loss. They can eliminate the Erie Storm (5-4) with any combination of Mariners wins and Storm losses equaling two and can eliminate second place Harrisburg with any combination of Mariners win and Stampede losses totaling three. It is not possible for the Mariners to clinch the conference title this weekend.
In the 2009 season the Mariners clinched the first playoff berth in franchise history in week 11 of the campaign on their way to finishing the regular season 9-5.
