Nemeth Tosses Six TDs in Win, Stokes Tallies Career Best Receiving Numbers
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (May 13, 2010) – The Baltimore Mariners tied the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) record for best start in league history by running their record to 9-0 by defeating the Fayetteville Guard 63-34. E.J. Nemeth tossed six touchdowns, three to Scorpio Brown and three to Aaron Yarbough, and Isaiah Grier had three rushing touchdowns to lead the Mariners to victory.
After topping Fayetteville by a total of 150-19 in two previous meetings this season, the Guard provided a much tougher challenge for the Mariners in their third match-up. Guard quarterback Nick Gildersleeve quickly put Fayetteville on top just 1:52 into the game with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Prentice Quince.
The Mariners countered with an E.J. Nemeth to Yarbough scoring strike and a Scorpio Brown two-point conversion provided Baltimore an 8-6 lead at the 8:20 mark of the first quarter. Within minutes Gildersleeve connected with Quince again and the Guard took a 13-8 lead with 4:55 to go in the opening quarter; a lead that would hold through the end of the first.
On a second and 13 from their own one, Gildersleeve was sacked by Mariners lineman Fearon Wright in the Fayetteville end zone, to earn a safety, and pull Baltimore within 13-10 with 14:05 to go in the half. Nemeth also tossed his second and third touchdowns of the night in the second quarter, a 1-yarder to Brown and a 23-yard toss to Yarbough with 50 seconds left in the half.
Quince again responded with his third TD grab from Gildersleeve with just 22 ticks left on the clock, ending the half with the Mariners holding a surprisingly slim 24-20 lead. In Baltimore’s first win against the Guard, a league-first 59-0 shutout, the Mariners led 25-0 at the half. In a 91-19 victory over Fayetteville on April 24th Baltimore tied a league-scoring record with 59 points in the first half with a 59-12 margin.
The Mariners owned the third quarter as they tallied 20 points to boost their lead to 44-20. The first score came on an Isaiah Grier three-yard rushing touchdown, his league-leading 18th of the season with 11:24 left in the third quarter. The Mariners then followed with Nemeth’s second scoring toss to Scorpio Brown at the 10:11 mark. Grier then added another score with 1:52 remaining in the period and Damon Harrison caught a two-point conversion to close the third quarter with the Mariners firmly in control after a shaky first half.
Fayetteville once again battled back as receiver Walter Ford, lined up at quarterback in a wildcat formation and bolted six yards for a score. From the same formation he added a two-point conversion jaunt to narrow the gap to 44-28.
Aaron Yarbough caught his third touchdown of the night and eighth of the season, on a 3-yard pass from Nemeth, and Baltimore again extended the lead to 50-28 with 10:45 left in the game. Just 58 seconds later, Gildersleeve threw his fourth TD pass of the night, hitting Ty Pettergru on a 21-yard pass, providing the Guard with their final points of the night and decreasing the Baltimore lead to 50-34.
With 5:45 to go in the game, Nemeth notched his sixth touchdown pass of the game; a 25-yarder to Brown. The score was Brown’s third of the night and with the three scores he now has 31 career TD receptions with the Mariners.
With linemen Adam Foley filling kicking duties for the night while AIFA-leading kicker J.R. Cipra mended an illness, the Mariners primarily went for two-point conversions. Following the Brown TD Foley got the call and booted the extra point extending the lead to 57-34.
The Mariners added a final touchdown on a Grier 2-yard TD run, which was set-up by a 34-pass from Baltimore back-up QB Matt Folke to Jamaal Stokes. Grier’s score came with 29 second to go in the contest. After a Jermaine Thaxton interception of a Gildersleeve pass on Fayetteville’s last drive, Folke ran out the clock for the record-tying 63-34 win.
In the Mariners ninth win E.J. Nemeth was 20 of 33 for six touchdowns and one interception. He totaled 247 yards passing. Jamaal Stokes led all receivers with career bests in receptions (11) and yards (155), while Brown (3 receptions/55 yards) and Yarbough (5 receptions/56 yards) accounted for all the scoring through the air.
Isaiah Grier increased his league-leading totals to 20 rushing touchdowns and 25 total touchdowns with his three scores. Grier now has 40 rushing touchdowns in 23 regular season games for the Mariners.
Defensively, Baltimore’s leading tacklers were Melik Brown (5), Brian Bradford (4.5), and Desmond Maul (4), while Wright, Bradford, and Thaxton all tallied sacks. Baltimore also boosted its AIFA-best takeaway numbers to 36 with interceptions by Thaxton and Richard Johnson and a fumble recovery by Armar Watson.
The Mariners will now seek a record tenth straight win to start the season when they take on the Richmond Raiders in Virginia on Saturday, May 29th at 7:00 PM following a bye next weekend. The Mariners then will close their season with three of four games at 1st Mariner Arena in June, with home dates on June 5th, 19th, and 26th.
