Baltimore, MD (May 13, 2010): Sir Edmund Hillary, along with Tenzingy Norgay, became the first known explorers to ever reach the top of Mount Everest. They stood at the top of the world. Seven major expeditions previously failed to reach the summit. One group came as close as 1,000 of the peak before having to turn back. Hillary stated after his achievement, “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”
On our trip back to Fayetteville, NC, I reflected on how we have gotten to where we are now as a team and the challenges that lie ahead of us in the future. Many, many questions have been asked regarding being undefeated, overcoming adversity and fighting off complacency. And, the big question, can we maintain our current momentum. The answers are, hard work, preparation, focus and yes, we can continue our current track if we continue to work hard, prepare and stay focus on our goal to win the AIFA Championship.
No matter how solid the opponent, the biggest obstacle that can stand in the way of our goal is ourselves. It takes discipline to continue to work on the mundane fundamentals that are so important to execute offensively and defensively. We cannot slack off, for one play, if we hope to prove ourselves as the best team in the league. This includes both practice and game day. The players and coaches are reminded of this on a daily basis.
There are no easy games as far as I am concerned. No one is going to go into a game against us feeling “defeated” before they even step on the field. Nor will we allow ourselves to think that any particular game is a “sure” win. Each game presents its own challenges. There are no short cuts to winning a championship.
I had the opportunity to go back home to Texas this past weekend to visit with my wife’s family and some of our close friends. While there, I took the time to go back to San Angelo. That is where my head coaching career started in Indoor Football six years ago. A lot has transpired over the years. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. As I walked through the coliseum there I understood that it was not luck that has brought me to this point in my career. It was hard work and perseverance that has allowed me to be where I am at today. I am very humbled by the success and feel very blessed to be a part of the Mariners organization.
Vince Lombardi once stated, "The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will." Every day we must have the will to overcome ourselves and meet our challenges head on as a team. Hard work, preparation and focus are the tools that will push us forward to achieve our goal.
