MARINERS DOMINATE STAMPEDE TO REMAIN THE BEST IN THE EAST
BALTIMORE, MD (May 5, 2010) – The Harrisburg Stampede rolled into the 1st Mariner Arena, talking the talk and showing great confidence that they would dethrone the Baltimore Mariners as kings of the AIFA Eastern Conference. The problem with Harrisburg talking the talk, they could not walk the walk. The Mariners run their record to 8-0, thanks to another dominating performance over the Stampede 50-17. An efficient passing game, a stifling defense, and a true to form kicking game were the key to yet another Mariners victory this week. With this win, the AIFA must take notice, that even our greatest competitors will fall short and not deny us our quest for the AIFA Championship this season. The exams are in; let’s see how the Mariners did against the Harrisburg Stampede.
Offense: A-
Let me make this very, very clear now that I have your attention; E.J. Nemeth is the best quarterback in the AIFA. If you have had the privilege of seeing this gridiron warrior play, you cannot help but be impressed with Nemeth and his incredible ability at the quarterback position. He had an incredible amount of pressure in his face from the Stampede defense at times; but still threw the bomb for big completions. Overall, Nemeth passed for 245 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched the ball in from the one yard line three times. Running back Isaiah Grier also had an incredible day against the Stampede defense. Grier rushed for 44 yards and one touchdown, and continues to be a threat on the ground for the Mariners offense. The Mariners wide receivers all had career days, starting with Aaron Yarbough who hauled in six receptions for 114 yards. Jamaal Stokes hauled in 82 yards receiving and one touchdown, and Scorpio Brown with 36 yards and two touchdowns.
Defense: A
This game is a testimate to the coaching staff preaching about watching game film and improving on the last game. Mariners defensive coordinator Steve Gaunt was impressed with the effort put forth by the second ranked defense in the AIFA. "The success of our defense is a direct result of the players’ preparation”, Coach Gaunt said about his defense, “we have a group of men that are professionals and know what needs to be done to be successful on and off the field. It is a pleasure to work with such a talented and focused group." I’m sure fans will agree in saying it is a pleasure to watch the Mariners defense dominate opponents. The Mariners defense allowed just ten rushing yards and 96 passing yards from the Harrisburg offense. The star of the defense was defensive back Desmond Maul, who racked up three interceptions. The Mariners defense also racked up three sacks, as they terrorized Stampede quarterback Kelvin Robinson all game long. Linebackers Adam Goloboski and Brian Bradford each had a sack, and defensive lineman Melik Brown racked up a sack as well. For the second straight week, the Swashbucklers held their opponents to under 20 points.
Special Teams: B
The special teams were solid, and kicker J.R. Cipra continues to bring Mariner fans to their feet with his impressive ability to pin opponents in terrible field position. The leading scorer in the AIFA managed to boot two unos in the Mariners big win against Harrisburg. The kickoff team covered the field very well and continues to be one of the best special teams units in the AIFA. Armar Watson returned kickoffs very well, his longest taking it out to midfield.
The Mariners now shift their focus back to Fayetteville, as they get ready to face the Guard for the final time this regular season. Coverage begins Thursday, May 13th in Fayetteville on our UStream broadcast. For now, the Mariners will enjoy their much needed bye week, and enjoy the best record in the AIFA.
