FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Reading Express turned two Fayetteville Guard turnovers into touchdowns late in the first half to cap a 46-point second quarter in a 62-33 American Indoor Football Association win at the Crown Coliseum Saturday night.
The Guard led 14-13 on a 30-yard scoring pass from Nicholas Gildersleeve to Torrey Pettigrew with 12:21 left in the first half.
Fayetteville (2-5) wouldn't score again until Prentice Quince caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Gildersleeve with 3:21 left in the third quarter.
That stopped a streak of 46 unanswered points for the Express. Reading (4-4) scored three touchdowns in the final 35 seconds of the first half.
A 14-yard TD run by Lucas Sherer gave the Express a 30-14 lead 35 seconds before the break.
Then Gildersleeve fumbled after getting hit from behind and Reading's Chris Osborne recovered in the end zone with 24 seconds left.
Sam Bryant picked off a Gildersleeve pass and returned it 24 yards for a score as the first half ended.
"I guess you could call it a big breakdown right there," Guard coach Marcus Wall said. "But the part I'm very proud of is that we fought back.
"In the second half, we really fought and did what we needed to do. That gives us something to build on."
Rob Flowers, who went 18-for-27 for 165 yards with five touchdowns, played just one series in the second half, hitting Tim Smith for an 8-yard score.
Express kicker Erik Rockhold missed the extra point but sent the ensuing kickoff through the uprights for a point and a 59-14 lead with 12:36 left in the third quarter.
The Guard used more blitzes in the second half against Reading quarterbacks Andres Coles and Dan Kelly, who combined to go just 3-for-6 for 27 yards.
Gildersleeve finished 18-for-31 for 180 yards with four TDs. The Guard quarterback took his lumps on a 2-yard run for a Fayetteville score that made it 62-27.
"We had a bad first half and kind of picked up in the second half," Guard defensive lineman Clenton Cochran said. "We made some changes up front, made some different calls and it started working for us."
The loss ended a two-game losing streak for the Express, which visits New Jersey Saturday night.
