Conference Rival, $10K Contest Highlight Sunday Game at 1st Mariner Arena
BALTIMORE, MD (April 30, 2010) – Awaiting the undefeated Baltimore Mariners this Sunday at 4:00 PM at 1st Mariner Arena is a battle with East Conference rivals, the Harrisburg Stampede (5-1). Awaiting their fans is what promises to be an outstanding football game, but also a day packed with contests and prizes, including a chance for one lucky fan to win $10,000!
The Mariners completed the first half of their season with a resounding 91-19 win over the Fayetteville Guard in North Carolina. It was a first half that saw the team establish a new record for best start in team history (currently 7-0 and counting), earn the first shutout in league annals, and tie a league record with 59 points in one half on their way to 91 points against the Guard.
Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson hopes to start the second half the same way his team started the first half, “In order to achieve our goal of winning the championship, we must continue to improve
daily. Our work ethic will not change over the second half of the season. We started the first half of the season with a win in Harrisburg. We need to do the same, this weekend in Baltimore, to start the second half of the season.”
Heading into the Harrisburg game the Mariners lead the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) in scoring defense allowing just 27.4 points per game. In the Stampede, Baltimore will face the league’s second stingiest defense, a unit which has given up just 29.5 points per game. The Mariners have compiled wider of margins of victory largely due to their potent, and league leading, scoring offense, which is averaging 66.3 points scored per game while Harrisburg’s ranks seventh with 43.8 points per game.
To maintain that level of performance in the second half of the season, Coach Simpson’s number one goal is to remain healthy. “It's a long season. The wear and tear on the body takes its toll. We will continue to keep bodies fresh and limit those players who are not 100%. We are looking to bring in some additional talent to continue to upgrade our roster from top to bottom.”
In addition to the action on the field the Mariners will be celebrating “We Love Baseball Too Night!” Fans wearing any form of baseball apparel can get a $17 ticket for just $10. Also, halftime will feature a first of its kind Celebrity Wiffle Ball Home Run Derby featuring Kristen Berset from Fox 45, Pete Gilbert from WBAL TV 11, and Nestor Aparicio and Rex Snider from WNST. Also, one lucky fan will have a chance to win $10,000 in the Apple Ford $10K TD Toss.
In addition to these great events the day will be full of contests where fans can win tickets to a Frederick Keys game, passes to the Apple Ford VIP Zone, tickets to Hoyt’s West Nursery Cinemas 14, and gift certificates to Buffalo Wings and Beer and the Greenhouse Grill.
