Team Finishes Three-Game Trip in North Carolina, Heads Home for Crucial Game
BALTIMORE, MD (April 23, 2010) – One key ingredient that was missing from the Baltimore Mariners’ 2009 playoff season was their ability to win on the road. Last season they were 3-5 away from 1st Mariner Arena including a 50-20 loss to the Reading Express in the first round of the playoffs.
In 2010, the team is off to a 3-0 start on the road and has taken the first two of a three-game road trip.
Baltimore Head Coach Chris Simpson knew that to be contenders the Mariners needed to prove themselves on the road, “So far, we have accomplished what we set out to do on the road. Looking at the schedule before the start of the season, I knew that this stretch of games would be a tough test for us and would really let us know where this team is going into the last seven games of the season. In order to get to the playoffs, and win a championship, we had to prove we could win on the road.”
Now as they get ready for the third game of their April road trip the Mariners, who seek to run their record to 7-0, face a potentially dangerous Fayetteville Guard team.
In the Fayetteville’s season opener, at Baltimore on March 21st, the Mariners soundly thrashed the Guard and recorded the American Indoor Football Association’s first shutout in a 59-0 win. Following the historic loss, then Guard Head Coach Webbie Burnett stated, “This team has enough character that we won't see a repeat of last week again.''
New Guard Head Coach Marcus Wall, who came on board after Burnett’s resignation following Fayetteville’s fourth game of the season, led the Guard to a 37-19 win in New Jersey last weekend in his head coaching debut.
Also, despite their 2-3 record, the Guard is 1-0 at home this season and 6-2 at the Crown Center in 2009 and 2010, while going 4-7 away from home.
For the Mariners, who are now 11-1 in the regular season dating back to May 23, 2009, avoiding a loss will be about following the same steps that earned them a 6-0 start. Simpson noted, “We must continue to focus on improving as a team. Teams will be bringing their best to play us each week and we must be on top of our game to be successful. We have not clinched anything yet. We must work harder and prepare better than anyone else in order to achieve our objectives.”
Following the Fayetteville game, the Mariners will return to 1st Mariner Arena for a much deserved home game on May 2nd; their first since March 28th. Awaiting them will be the Harrisburg Stampede who currently sits in second place at 4-1. Despite their recent success on the road and the challenges posed by the Stampede, the Mariners will be happy to return to 1st Mariner Arena where they hold a 9-1 record since the start of the 2009 season.
