Coach Extends Thanks to our Mariner Maniacs, Discusses Road Ahead
BALTIMORE, MD (April 22, 2010) – Big win against Reading last weekend. But, I will get back to that.
I played high school football in a small town located in North Central Idaho; Orofino, Idaho to be more exact. The population at the time was around 3500 and my graduating class totaled around 85 classmates. I had an awesome experience going to school there, and, to this day maintain some wonderful relationships.
Fridays during football season were great. The team would meet at the Ponderosa for breakfast and then make our way to the school. Once there, we would find our lockers loaded with all kinds of baked goods and munchies, courtesy of our “Guardian Angels”.
Before each season, the young ladies who attended Orofino High, would get together and pick a player that they would support for the upcoming season. These Guardian Angels would go out of their way to make baskets, bags or boxes full of special treats, signs and banners for the player they picked. The best part was the players never knew who they were to start the season.
During my senior season, my Guardian Angel was Cristine Leonard. She was a great “Angel”. To this day, I still have some of the things she made in an old foot locker full of memorabilia.
I only mention this because I want to extend my appreciation and gratitude to group of people who are our “Guardian Angels”, the Mariner Maniacs. It’s ironic that this group calls themselves the Maniacs as that was our high school mascot. Don’t believe me, Google it!
This group goes above and beyond the call of your average fan. There is always someone from this group at our away games banging away on their buckets and cheering their Baltimore Mariners on. On overnight trips, they are always there to provide the coaches and players with boxes and ice chests full of food and drinks. It reminds so much about my old high school days. They provide an awesome experience for us. I know I speak for my players and coaches when I say, “Thank You” for your tremendous support.
Now back to Reading. What a great win for this team and organization. My players and coaches put forth one of their best efforts of the season to help maintain our undefeated record. This has become a great rivalry for us. The Express organization is first class from the ownership down to the players and it has always been a pleasure competing against them. However, we still have a long journey ahead of us.
Our road to the championship doesn’t get any easier. We are on the road for the third week in a row when we travel to an improving Fayetteville Guard team. The Guard has always been tough to play at the Crown Center. With each win, the target on our back becomes bigger and our challengers tougher. I don’t expect anything less than Fayetteville’s best come Saturday. As always, we must continue to focus on improving as a team and continue to work harder than anyone else.
General George S. Patton once said, “Accept the challenges so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.” That’s why we play the game.
