STYLE POINTS TO BE AWARDED BY WIFL TEAMS IN 2007
2006-12-12 12:52:08
Turning what many football purists deem a negative into a positive, the World Indoor Football League announces that “style points” will be awarded to its four teams following each game of the inaugural WIFL 2007 season.
A panel of six fans and media will grade a team according to its execution, ability to make big plays, “watchability,” athletic ability, and coaching. A winning team can earn a maximum of 60 points a game and a losing team 24.
The team with the highest cumulative “style point” total at the end of the season will be recognized with a trophy presented during championship game week. Style points could remotely come into play as the fourth post-season tie-breaker behind overall record, head-to-head competition and point differential.
So you can say that the WIFL is akin to major college football in the fact that both organizations have a one-game championship playoff where style points could determine which teams are playing. YOU can say that. We’re sure aren’t.
“All kidding aside, this could be fun for the fans,’’ said WIFL commissioner Gary Tufford . “Style points – love them or hate them -- have become one of the new catch phrases of present day football. If it adds to the excitement of what we feel will be a quality football experience, I’m all for it. There’s even a possible sponsorship opportunity for the right company.”

The WIFL, determined to set the standard both on and off the field for indoor football, kicks off its inaugural season February 11, 2007 when the Daytona Beach Thunder hosts the Augusta Spartans.
STYLE POINT CRITERIA
Execution – Did the team keep its mistakes to a minimum, make the key blocks, the key tackle, run the right formations? Winning team is graded on scale of 5-10, losing 1-4
Big Plays – Did the team convert on third down, score right before halftime or make the big momentum changing stop on defense? Winning team: 5-10, losing 1-4
Watchability – Plain and simply, did this team’s play hold your attention for 60 minutes or as long as the game was competitive? Winning team: 5-10, losing 1-4
Athletic Ability -- Did the players on the team showcase their athletic ability, escaping a tackle for a run or burning a defensive back. Same on defense. Winning team: 5-10, losing 1-4
Coaching - -Did it seem like the right plays were called at the right time and the right players were in the game. Was the team ready to play. Did they make the adjustments at half time? Winning team: 5-10, losing 1-4
