The Augusta Colts signed place kicker Chris Akers to a professional contract after their Athens combine, (June 27, 2009). The 5’10”, 190lb native of Huntington, W.Va, impressed the Colts with his distance, accuracy, willingness to defend his position and, (more so) by his tenacity in fighting off the effects of a lingering sports hernia. Chris, who kicked his first FG while in the seventh grade, was a four year varsity starter at Spring Valley High; where he was awarded a spot on the All-County Football Team every year and was the All-State kicker during his senior season. His success earned him the attention of the Va. Tech Hokies; where he played (briefly) until opting to devote his prime time & energy to his studies as an architect. Before trying out for the Colts, Chris shook the rust off of his kicking game by playing for the Gwinnett County Patriots; where he was 100% on PAT’s and averaged between 60 and 65 yards per kickoff. With a full recovery from his injuries, the Colts expect to see Chris Akers, Jerome Thompson, and possibly one additional player (TBA) battle it out next spring in training camp.
