COLUMBUS, GA (August 12, 2009) – On Tuesday the American Indoor Football Association announced their yearly awards with the Southern Division Champion Columbus Lions earning six All-AIFA First Team awards including defensive back Damian Daniels receiving the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Despite only playing in 12 regular season games, Daniels led the Lions to the Southern Division title finishing tied for first in the AIFA with 17 interceptions including four that were returned for touchdowns. In 38 career games for Columbus, Damian has collected 41 interceptions and previously earned Defensive Player of Year Award back in 2007 with the WIFL.
Also helping turnaround a Lions club that went from a league worst total defense in 2008 to the sixth ranked defense in 2009 were linebacker Justen Rivers and defensive end Mike Berry. Rivers led the club in tackles with 50.5 while gathering 8.5 sacks. Justen is the clubs all-time leader in tackles accumulating 129 over three seasons. Berry ended the 09 campaign tied for first in the AIFA with 9.5 sacks. Mike also ended the season second in tackles for a loss collecting 13.
In addition, earning All-Star nods is place kicker Carlos Martinez concluding the 2009 season leading the AIFA with 33 uno’s while finishing second in scoring with 176 points. Carlos completed the year with a 51.1 % field goal percentage and connected on 71 of 82 PAT attempts.
