COLUMBUS, GA (July 3, 2009) – As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, the Southern Division Champion Columbus Lions (11-3) of the American Indoor Football Association will set sail into the playoffs which are set to begin this Monday night at 7:30 PM.
It’s an exciting time and period for any club as they approach the playoffs, but for the Columbus Lions they are more concentrated on lamenting that pressure and just playing their style of football. The style of football that consists of having the number three scoring offense in the AIFA (51.8 pts/game), the number two scoring defense that only surrenders 33.4 points per game, and boast the number one turnover margin at +26.
Despite all that, Columbus knows that the playoffs begin a new season, where all those achievements from the regular season mean nothing. Take notice from other league action as the Reading Express exacted some revenge from two regular season defeats by defeating the Baltimore Mariners 50-20 last night to advance to the AIFA Conference Championship to either take on the Lions or the Guard.
Columbus will be trying to reverse that fortune considering two of their four wins on to close out the regular season have come against the Fayetteville Guard. Last weekend these two clubs squared off in a playoff preview that ended in a 44-26 victory securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs for the Lions. Never surrendering the lead, the Lions defense never allowed Fayetteville to gain any momentum finishing the game with three interceptions and five sacks.
“We have been here before and have veterans on this team, they understand that winning a division title means nothing,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Every minor mistake can become crucial as we are basically in a three game season beginning Monday night.”
Coming off that game last weekend, a couple of key Lions came up with minor injuries including team sack leader Mike Berry and fullback Richard Fitzhugh who finished the regular season tops in the league with 17 rushing touchdowns. Both have been cleared to play but Columbus will still have to do without linebacker Ryan Babb who has missed the last two games with a knee injury.
After being in the thick of the division race in the middle of June, Fayetteville has been in a tailspin losing three straight. Ever since that fourth quarter back on June 13th against the Lions, the Guard have been looking for answers offensively and have even put in back-up quarterback Nicolas Gildersleeve to try and solve their offensive woes. Last weekend, starting QB Shawn Withy-Allen was 12 of 23 passing for 102 yards and three interceptions before getting pulled for Gildersleeve.
“Our club can not be expecting we get the same results we had last week against this same team,” continues Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Fayetteville will be coming through here with a chip on their shoulder and expect this battle to come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes as the winner will have to play flawless football.”
The Lions are offering a discounted pricing structure for all playoff games with Jungle seats rows A, B, and C reduced to $30. Lower Level seats are $15 and Upper Level seats will be $10. The 2009 postseason kicks off this Monday night at 7:30 PM with the 2009 Southern Division Champion Columbus Lions hosting the Fayetteville Guard. Call 706-322-3336 to get in the action and reserve your seats today. March right along with the Lions as they try to capture the AIFA Championship!
