The Baltimore Mariners continue their weekly match-up report by previewing and breaking down their upcoming game against the D.C. Armor.
Baltimore Mariners (6-4) vs. D.C. Armor (2-8)
Date/Time: Saturday, June 6th, 7:00 PM
Place: D.C. Armory, Washington D.C.
Baltimore Mariners Last Outing:
The pride of Charm City was maintained as the Mariners shelled the Armor 57-25. E.J. Nemeth tossed five touchdowns and Armar Watson pulled in three interceptions, including a 50-yard TD return to lead the Mariners to victory.
D.C. Armor Last Outing:
It was not a good night for the Armor, as D.C.’s #1 ranked defense was rocked by the Mariners for eight scoring drives (five touchdowns and three field goals) and the Baltimore D added two more scores for a total of seven touchdowns on the night.
Series:
Baltimore leads the series 1-0. The Mariners took the first of three match-ups this season.
Baltimore Mariners Profile:
In just their second season of play, the Mariners are now on the verge of a playoff bid. With a win this weekend, and a Harrisburg loss, the Mariners will earn a spot in the big dance.
D.C. Armor Profile:
The Armor took one on the chin last week, but can still make the Mariners’ playoff chase miserable with two match-ups remaining. D.C. is 1-3 at home this season, but has faced tough competition in two losses to Reading (9-3) and one to Fayetteville (7-3).
Players to Watch:
Baltimore Mariners:
Offense: QB E.J. Nemeth (6’3", 245, Sacred Heart), RB Isaiah Greer (6’1", 215, Rhode Island), WR Jamaal Stokes (6’1", 185, Alcorn St.), WR Scorpio Brown (6'4", 225, Morehouse), and WR Aaron Yarbough (5'10", 185, Virginia Military Institute).
Defense: DB/WR Armar Watson (5’11", 180, Duquesne), DB Richard Johnson (5'11", 200, Virginia Tech), DB Andre Letren (5'11", 195, Troy State), LB Fearon Wright (6'4", 245, Rhode Island), DB T-Wuan Prather (5'10", 180, Bowie State), LB/DL Adam Goboloski (6'0", 235, Richmond), and LB Vincent Tiberi (6'2", 240, Wesley).
Special Teams: K J.R. Cipra (5'9", 170, Ohio Northern).
D.C. Armor:
Offense: RB James Gibson (6’2”, 270, North Carolina) and WR Darnell McDonald (6’3”, 215, Kansas State).
Defense: LB Mike Woodhouse (6’4”, 240), Sikyala Kabote (6’0”, 200, Bowie State), DB William Haith (6’0”, 200, Liberty), and LB Joe Hooks (6’0”, 230, Shepherd).
When the Mariners have the ball:
With their outburst last week the Mariners are now averaging 46 points per game (good for sixth best in the AIFA). Isaiah Grier continues to lead the AIFA in rushing and Nemeth has improved his individual numbers. He now ranks seventh in the league in passing (1,536 yards) and total offense (1,709 yards) and his passing efficiency rating has risen to 94.1. Last week against D.C., Aaron Yarbough led the Mariners with 82 yards receiving including a 49-yard touchdown reception. Despite the Baltimore offensive explosion last week, D.C. maintained its hold as the number one total defense. They also managed to stifle the Mariners league best rushing offense, holding it to 18 net yards, so they are still a daunting defense despite last week’s outcome.
When the Armor has the ball:
The Armor’s main weapons against the Mariners last week were bruising running back James Gibson, who totaled 30 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries, and wide receiver Ricky Simmons who tallied 95 yards and a touchdown on only four receptions. The Mariners defense had it best yardage performance of the season allowing D.C. only 138 yards of total offense. Baltimore now ranks fifth in passing defense (178.2 yards per game) and sixth in total defense (208.9 yards per game). Turnovers continue to be the Mariners bread and butter. Baltimore gathered five turnovers against D.C. last week and now has a league leading 25 interceptions. Last week Watson and Goboloski both returned interceptions for scores.
Game Outlook:
Early in the second half of last week’s game, for a brief time, D.C. showed how tough an Armor-Mariners battle can be as they cut the lead to 19-14 with two quick scores. The sudden tight score; however, only seemed to ignite the Mariners and their fans as Baltimore pulled away easily and won 57-25. Expect a tougher match-up on D.C.’s home turf, but more of the same from the Mariners.
