BALTIMORE, MD (May 30, 2009) – Powered by a season-high five touchdown passes from Quarterback E.J. Nemeth and three interceptions by Armar Watson, the Baltimore Mariners annihilated I-95 Rivals, the D.C. Armor, 57-25 at 1st Mariner Arena in an American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) match-up.
On the strength of two Nemeth touchdown passes, a five-yard strike to wide receiver Scorpio Brown and a forty-yard scoring play to WR Aaron Yarbough, and two long-range (45, 55) field goals by Mariners kicker J.R. Cipra the Mariners raced to a 19-0 lead at the half.
The Armor quickly countered in the second half with two touchdowns to cut the score to 19-14 early in the third quarter, but Nemeth tossed his third score of the day, a 15-yard pass to Jamaal Stokes to boost the Baltimore lead to 26-14. Following a field goal and rouge on the ensuing kickoff, the Mariner lead was narrowed to 26-18 at the end of the third quarter.
Nemeth, Cipra, and Watson quickly went to work to boost Baltimore to 31 fourth quarter points. Nemeth connected with Stokes on a 40-yard pass play to increase the lead to 33-18, Cipra added his third field goal of the day to move the Mariners to a 36-18 advantage and Watson pulled in his third interception of the day and bolted 50 yards for the score to provide Baltimore with a 43-18 margin.
With just over three minutes to play the Armor plunged in from three yards out to cut the lead to 43-25. In the final minutes of play Nemeth hit Brown for the second time in the end zone to push the lead to 50-25 and Linebacker Adam Goboloski added the final dent in the Armor as he picked off a D.C. pass and returned it five yards to give the Mariners the final margin of victory 57-25.
With four games to go, Baltimore (6-4) now trails the North Division leading Reading Express (9-3) by two games (Baltimore holds the tie-breaker with two wins over Reading). The Mariners also retained the lead for the division’s final playoff spot by 2 ½ games over Harrisburg (4-7) and widened the gap to four games over D.C. (2-8) and Erie (2-8). A Mariner win this weekend coupled with a Harrisburg loss would earn Baltimore its first playoff berth in the AIFA.
Baltimore will seek the playoff spot when it heads to D.C. to take on the Armor at the D.C. Armory on June 6th at 7:00 PM.
