COLUMBUS, GA (May 19, 2009) – With both clubs coming off bye weeks, the Columbus Lions (7-2) of the American Indoor Football Association travel this Saturday night to take on the Baltimore Mariners (4-4) in a rematch from Week 5.
Back in early April, the Mariners could not withstand a Lions scoring barrage as Columbus defeated Baltimore 82-19. Offensively, Lions receivers combined to score five touchdowns and the defense put on a showcase holding Mariners quarterbacks Earnest Nemeth and Matt Folke to a combined 10 of 41 passes including five interceptions.
Following a Florence loss to the Carolina Speed, the Lions entered the week in sole possession of first place and are looking to extend their five game winning streak against northern division opponents and look to go 3-0 overall against the Mariners.
After losing to Erie 53-50 on a game ending field goal two weeks ago, the Mariners fell 3.5 games behind first place Reading. Baltimore will be looking to try and hold off Harrisburg and D.C. for that second and final playoff spot out of the north division.
Baltimore is lead offensively by running back Isaiah Grier who leads the AIFA in rushing averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Behind Grier, the Mariners sport the leagues number one rushing attack with 54.8 yards per game. Although leading the league in rushing, the Mariners passing attack has remained dismal as opponents have held them to 152.4 yards per game.
Leading the number one scoring offense (54.4 pts/game), Lions quarterback Kevin Huff should find some room against a pass offense that allows 152 yards a game. Huff will have to be on the lookout for Mariners defensive back Amar Watson who is tied for first in the AIFA in interceptions (9) with Lions DB Damian Daniels. In his last two games, Huff is 33 of 56 for 378 yards and 10 total touchdowns.
“Looking at the rest of our schedule, I saw this game as the game I was most worried about,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Despite winning like we did against them earlier in the season, Baltimore is a really good team and I have a feeling that we may be going into this matchup overconfident, but I’m making my guys aware that this wont be the same team we played against earlier in the season.”
As the Lions will try to sink the Mariners ship fans can be sure to tune into the game this Saturday night at 7:00 pm by logging on to www.columbuslions.net and clicking on the listen live icon.
