COLUMBUS, GA (May 13, 2009) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce that wide receiver Troy Bergeron has signed with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.
Through six games, Bergeron was leading the Lions in receiving with 34 receptions, 403 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Falcons originally signed him on April 28 but released him later that day because of a hamstring injury. The club later said it would give him another opportunity if he could pass his physical after his hamstring healed.
Bergeron signed with the Lions in March after spending three seasons with the AFL’s Georgia Force and was named AFL Rookie of the Year in 2005. Troy chose signing with the Columbus Lions after weighing options in the Canadian Football League before choosing to sign back with his hometown team.
Bergeron, who was a three-year starter and a member of Shaw’s undefeated 2000 state championship team signed with the Falcons in 2006 but was released after the final preseason game. Bergeron was later picked up by the Buffalo Bills in Week 13 and finished out the year on the practice squad.
“Truly blessed to have a second opportunity and its up to me to make sure that I stick around for good this time,” says new Falcon Troy Bergeron. “It was a real treat to play in Columbus over the past two months in front of some old friends and hometown fans.”
“Anytime you lose the caliber of player like Troy it will have an impact on your club,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “It’s something we pride ourselves in with moving players up to the next level and fulfilling their football dreams.”
The Columbus Lions (7-2) are enjoying a bye this week but will be back in action on May 23 as they take on the Baltimore Mariners (4-4). Fans can follow all the action by logging on to www.columbuslions.net and clicking on the listen live icon.
