COLUMBUS, GA (May 8, 2009) – The Columbus Lions (6-2) of the American Indoor Football Association travel to Greenville, South Carolina to take on the Carolina Force (3-4) in a key rematch between two clubs jockeying for playoff postioning.
The difference between the Force and the Lions in the standings is a mere 2.5 games, that’s the difference between first and fourth as a loss could prove vital in an already tight south division. In games played against each other, the south division is 13-13. When playing against the rest of the AIFA, they are 10-2 with both losses coming from the Reading Express.
With the Florence Phantoms losing last week and Columbus winning, the Lions moved into a first place tie with the Phantoms. “I hate to say that a loss here could ruin our chances at the postseason, but the way this south division is stacked I don’t want to take that chance,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “From here on out we must treat every game as if it were a playoff game.”
In the 54-33 Columbus victory last weekend, the Lions maintained pressure on South Carolina QB Andrew Webb forcing him to throw four interceptions while he only completed 23 of his 53 passes. The Columbus secondary kept the receiving trio of Cory McKinney, Isaac West, and Anthony Young quiet with only 10 catches and 137 yards combined.
Only one point separated these teams at half time, but the Lions offense exploded for 23 third quarter points. Despite being without leading wide receiver Troy Bergeron, who was nursing a tweaked hamstring in hopes of signing another mini-camp deal with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the Lions receiving core didn’t miss a beat as Gerald Gales finished with a team high 88 yards and Joel Babb collected three touchdowns.
Lions QB Kevin Huff impressed the coaching staff with his five-touchdown night and former starter Bill Ashburn was given his release and later signed on with the Harrisburg Stampede. Todd Spitzer who saw limited playing time last weekend will now take over the back-up role.
“Huff really showed us a lot last week but tomorrow he will have his first road start which is a good test for a young QB,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “We haven’t fared too well on the road so far and in order to change that we have to become more discipline and cut down on the penalties and turnovers.”
