Q&A With Coach Gibson
May 7, 2009 (COLUMBUS, GA.) - Hi my name is Teneshia Ruff. I’m a native of Columbus, Ga but I attend school at Jacksonville University located in Jacksonville Fl. I’m a rising senior planning to graduate in December. This is my first year interning, and I was allotted the wonderful opportunity to be able to work with the Columbus Lions. For my first project I had the chance to interview head Coach Jason Gibson. Coming off of a great performance last season from his team I was eager to hear Coach Gibson’s perspective on this year’s team. I was able to get his view on his team’s success thus far eight games into the season and his outlook for the remainder of the season heading into the playoffs.
1) What would you describe as being your toughest obstacle to overcome thus far this season? I would have to say trying to develop rookie QB’s to the arena game.
2) What would you describe as being your most memorable moment this season? Getting ready to get on the bus for a road trip to Harrisburg and my wife calling me saying her water broke. Seeing my son born and then flying to Harrisburg and getting a tough victory on the road. I will never forget that weekend.
3) Looking ahead what are the keys to get the Lions into the playoffs? We need to become more discipline. I am referring to penalties and turnovers. If we don’t correct those problems, our season will end shorter than we hope.
4) How big of an impact would you say adding kicker Carlos Martinez has played this season? He is the BEST kicker I have ever seen. He could be considered our offensive specialist.
5) To what do you contribute your continued success with the Lions this season? My ownership, front office staff, coaches, players, and most importantly my family. This has been a team effort. Not a one man show.
6) What lessons have you learned as a player that have helped you in transitioning into the coaching field? Just playing the game and now being able to communicate with the players because I have been in their shoes.
7) How are you able to generate continued community support for your Columbus Lions? I try to be honest, get involved with the community, and do the right thing. Columbus is a great place to live and I believe in the Columbus Lions bring value to this community.
8) How do you feel Kevin Huff will be an impact on the remainder of the season? Great question, I don’t know. QB is the hardest position on the field but Kevin has improved week to week and had his best game to date. He has all of the tools to be successful.
9) Coming off of a stellar offensive performance last season how would you say that has impacted your coaching style this season? I kind of have taken it for granite. This year because we had 3 rookie quarterbacks, I had to start from scratch but we are slowly coming around and have the ability to be even better than last year.
10) Going into the second half of the season what do you feel should be the team’s main focus? Our next game!
