The Lions kick the Force out of Columbus
May 2, 2009 (COLUMBUS, GA) -Despite a creditable effort by the South Carolina Force (3-4) the Columbus Lions proved to be too much for them to handle. In front of a great crowd in support of Youth League appreciation night the Columbus Lions (6-2) of the American Indoor Football Association defeated the South Carolina Force 54-33.
Thanks to a great start offensively, the Lions they were able to build a lead on the Force and never look back. Richard Fitzhugh put the Lions on the board first with a three yard rushing touchdown in the opening quarter. Quarterback Kevin Huff then connected with wide receiver Joel Babb with a 9 yard touchdown strike shortly into the second quarter putting the Lions up 15-0. The Force put two scores on the board before the end of the half, bringing them within one (15-14) going into halftime.
The Lions jumped on the Force early and often in the third quarter with Huff connecting for three touchdowns to three different receivers. He tacked on two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter hitting Babb with a 17 yard pass and Gerald Gales with an 8 yard pass to put the game away (54-33).
In his first career start of the season, Huff went 14 of 20 with 5 passing touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns went to wide receiver Joel Babb who returned to the starting lineup after Troy Bergeron was signed by the Falcons. Babb finished the night with 6 catches for 57 yards to go along with his three scores.
The Lions special teams and defense also had a huge night. The AIFA’s league leading kicker Carlos Martinez nailed five uno’s and tallied 12 total points. Defensively the Lions forced four interceptions two being picked off by Damian Daniels and one by Ramone Nickerson. In Daniels career with the Lions he has played 31 games and has snared 31 interceptions.
This win brings the Columbus Lions into a tie for first place in the Southern Division with the Florence Phantoms.
