COLUMBUS, GA (May 1, 2009) – After suffering a setback last weekend in Fayetteville, the Columbus Lions (5-2) of the American Indoor Football Association look to get back on track as they take on the expansion South Carolina Force (3-3).
After being up by as much as ten, the Lions fell behind late as Walter Ford pulled in a 24 yard touchdown pass from Shawn Withy-Allen with 59 seconds left to seal the 41-37 victory for the Guard. Columbus had many opportunities to finish off the Guard including an 11 play, 32 yard drive that ate up almost seven minutes of the fourth quarter but ended on a failed fourth down attempt.
“We struggled offensively and defensively could not do what we do best in creating turnovers and getting after the quarterback,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “We are still trying to fix a lot of mistakes that will determine our fate for the rest of the season.”
Despite only having one turnover, the Lions committed 13 penalties for 86 yards, the second straight week Columbus has piled up that number of penalties.
Coming off their franchise’s first home win, the Force come into the contest winners of three out of their last four including last weeks win over the Carolina Speed 37-27. South Carolina has been the AIFA’s biggest surprise thus far holding their own with a 2-2 record against division opponents in arguably the leagues toughest division.
South Carolina has primarily been getting it done through the air as they own the AIFA’s second best pass offense at 235 yards/game. Guiding the Force has been wide receiver Anthony Young who leads the league in receiving yards per game at 91 yards.
“The rest of our schedule is going to be a battle with six of our remaining seven games against division rivals,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “The Force has surprised some people but not me since some of their guys played with the Augusta Colts last season.”
Some names Lions fans might remember include wide receivers Anthony Young, Corey McKinney, and Isaac West all of whom played for the Augusta Colts last season which will add some fuel to this new rivalry.
This Saturday night is “Little League Appreciation Night” where all fans ages 14 and under wearing their baseball/softball jersey get in the game free. Contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN for more details.
