COLUMBUS, GA (April 22, 2009) – In a south division square-off between two military town based teams, the Columbus Lions (Ft. Benning) of the American Indoor Football Association roll into Fayetteville, North Carolina this Saturday night to take on the Guard (Ft. Bragg).
The Fayetteville Guard are still searching for their first win in the Benning vs. Bragg series after losing twice to the Lions last season, once by a score of 75-16 in late April and a final second loss that put them out of the 2008 playoffs losing 59-58 in the last week of the season.
Fayetteville (3-2) started the 2009 season scorching hot after defeating division foes Carolina and South Carolina, but has since cooled down losing two out of their last three. Last weekend the Guard lost a final second thriller to the South Carolina Force after coming back from a two touchdown deficit. They took a one point lead with: 50 to go only to lose 53-48 after Force QB Andrew Webb went 5 for 5 on the final drive hitting receiver Cory McKinney for a 3 yard score.
Fayetteville is led by quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen, with him under center the Guard sports the AIFA’s 2nd best passing efficiency completing 62.6% of his passes and has allowed the second fewest sacks only surrendering four in five games.
Columbus comes roaring into Fayetteville hot off a three game winning streak including last week’s 76-6 thrashing of the D.C. Armor. Lions arrive into the Benning vs. Bragg matchup boasting the AIFA’s #1 pass defense (161 yards/game) and #1 total defense (188.2 yards/game). After gathering four sacks and four interceptions last weekend, the Columbus defense continues to put a stranglehold on opposing quarterbacks leading the league with 20 sacks and 26 turnovers.
After their strong showing last week, the Lions moved up the charts offensively to the number two scoring offense at 57.8 points per game. “A lot of our points have been attributed to how our defense has been playing,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Our offense has a lot of improving and we’re not quite where I think we should be.”
Top AIFA kicker Carlos Martinez is set to return to action for the Lions this week after attending the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs veteran minicamp.
