Force win in final seconds
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The South Carolina Force scored with 8.9 seconds left Saturday night to beat the Fayetteville Guard, 53-48, in American Indoor Football Association play at Crown Coliseum
The Force (2-3) held a 41-27 lead in the fourth period before Fayetteville (3-2) rallied.
Shawn Withy-Allen hit Walter Ford for a 30-yard touchdown with 9:09 left and Jason Cherry added the extra point to cut the Force lead to 41-34. Withy-Allen ran eight yards for a touchdown with 4:17 remaining and Cherry kicked the PAT to tie the score at 41.
A fourth down reverse to former Furman standout Issac West resulted in a 2-yard touchdown run for South Carolina (2-3) with 58 seconds left.
The Force called time before going for it on fourth down.
"We thought the quarterback was going to boot around but it ended up being the same thing," Guard coach Charles Gunnings said. "But he didn't make the play. We beat ourselves tonight."
The conversion kick banged against an upright and was no good, leaving the Force lead at 47-41.
Fayetteville (3-2) answered quickly as Jay Jackson hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass from Withy-Allen just before banging into the padding in the back of the end zone with 50 seconds left.
Cherry converted and the Guard led 48-47 with 50 seconds left.
Quarterback Andrew Webb completed five passes on South Carolina's final drive, hitting Cory McKinney for a 3-yard score to regain the lead with 8.9 seconds to go.
The Guard had a final possession but Chris Jackson and Shawn Sanders deflected deep balls by Withy-Allen in the closing seconds.
"You can't beat a team when you lose the turnover battle three to zero," Withy-Allen said.
Jackson had a pair of interceptions and the Force scored one play after recovering a Ford fumble at its 17 with 49.9 seconds left in the first half. Webb found Anthony Young on a 33-yard scoring pass for a 22-14 South Carolina lead immediately after the turnover.
"We've got to take care of the ball better," Withy-Allen said. "We came on at the end, finally caught our stride รณ but it was too little too late."
