The Armor arrived in Columbus hoping to get the season back on track. Instead, they suffered the worst loss in their franchise’s short history.
Just over three minutes into the game, Columbus DB Damian Daniels returned an interception 25 yards for the game’s first score. Turnovers was a problem the Armor hoped to address, but it would be a recurring theme throughout the night, as Lions’ Chris Goffer (DB) and Ryan Babb (LB) would also return interceptions for touchdowns.
Daniels’ interception was just the beginning of a brutal first quarter for the Armor. The D.C. defense would allow touchdown passes of 48 and 40 yards in the first fifteen minutes, as Columbus jumped out to an early first quarter lead.
Columbus QB Kevin Huff added a five-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, extending the Lions lead to 28-0. The Armor finally got on the scoreboard with 8:44 remaining in the first half, as Kenneth Irby tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Gary Brigg. The score would be the only one of the night for D.C., as the Lions would pour on an additional 48 unanswered points.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Armor, who fell to 1-4 on the season, while Columbus improved to 5-1. The Armor return home next week to face the Harrisburg Stampede (2-3). The game will be crucial for the Armor, as the Stampede represents both a beatable opponent and a division rival.
Notes:
D.C. WR Gary Briggs’ touchdown reception was his first on the season…Lions WR Troy Bergeron torched the Armor for four touchdown receptions of 40, 8, 17 and 17 yards apiece. Bergeron was a standout for the AFL’s Georgia Force, and is spending 2009 with Columbus…Lions PK Carlos Martinez missed the game as he was at an NFL tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs. Tony Yelk filled in, converting 8 of 11 extra point attempts and adding an uno.
