Match-up
After a disappointing home stand, the Armor will be looking to get back on track against Columbus. After notching the franchise’s first victory in dramatic fashion on March 28 against the Erie RiverRats, the Armor dropped its next two games to the Reading Express and Fayetteville Guard.
Columbus looks to continue its winning ways. After suffering its first loss on March 28, the Lions bounced back by crushing the Baltimore Mariners 82-19, and edging out the Harrisburg Stampede in dramatic fashion, 35-33.
This will be the first time the Armor have played Columbus, and will be the only match-up between the two teams this season.
When the Armor Have the Ball
The Armor have struggled with the football, and are currently ranked last in the AIFA in scoring offense, averaging just 18.2 points per game. The Lions enter the game with the league’s sixth ranked defense, allowing 38.6 points per game.
After beginning the season with an almost exclusive passing attack, the Armor made a concerted effort to run the ball against Fayetteville. It paid off: James Gibson recorded D.C.’s first rushing touchdown of the season.
When the Lions Have the Ball
The Armor’s defensive ranking took a hit against Fayetteville, as the team slid from the second to seventh in the league in points allowed (42.5 per game). However, much of the 59 points surrendered were out of the defense’s hands (the D.C. offense was directly responsible for two interceptions returned for touchdowns as well as a safety), and the unit remains the bright spot of the season.
Regardless, they will have their hands full on Saturday, as Columbus enters with the league’s second ranked offense (54.2 points per game). While the Lions’ passing offense is rather pedestrian (ranks seventh in the league with 172.4 yards per game), Columbus ranks second in the league with 12 rushing touchdowns on the season, and lead the league in field goals made with 11.
Players to Watch
Columbus Lions – #32 Richard Fitzhugh FB/LB
Fitzhugh has been the workhorse of the Lions’ rushing attack, and leads the league in rushing touchdowns, with nine of the season. He has added a receiving touchdown and kick return touchdown for good measure; the total of eleven puts Fitzhugh in a tie with Wyoming’s Dante Dudley for first in the league.
D.C. Armor – #55 Mike Woodhouse LB/K
Woodhouse has been the star of the Armor’s standout defense, leading the league with 6.5 sacks. Woodhouse is currently on pace to finish with 22.5 sacks on the season, a total that would obliterate the previous AIFA record (Wyoming’s Rodney Wasche, 14.5 in 2008). Woodhouse also serves as one of the team’s kickers, and has the team’s only made field goal on the season.
