COLUMBUS, GA (April 16, 2009) – The Columbus Lions (4-1) of the American Indoor Football Association look to make it three straight wins against the North Division as they will take on the traveling Washington D.C. Armor (1-3) this Saturday night at 7:30 pm.
After trailing by as much as 13 points, the Lions made a roaring comeback defeating the Harrisburg Stampede 35-33. Trailing throughout much of the game, the Columbus defense held the Stampede to only ten 2nd half points allowing for the offense to make the comeback thanks to a late touchdown run by running back Richard Fitzhugh.
Of the 193 points allowed, the Lions defense has only surrendered 59 second half points. Led by Mike Berry’s 4 sacks and the team’s 18 interceptions, Columbus continues to top the league in both categories. “Our defense has been the mainstay for us all season,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Thanks to some late turnovers and big-time sacks, they allow our offense to gather some much needed rhythm.”
Despite only allowing 139 yards per game, Washington rides into Columbus after getting thrashed 58-19 by the Fayetteville Guard (Armor/Guard stats not reported). Much like Columbus, D.C. has struggled offensively only averaging 18.2 points per game. Led by quarterback Mike Scipione, the Armor is second to last in total offense (163.8 yds per game).
Columbus is expected to be without top point’s leader Carlos Martinez as he will be heading into his second work out with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. “I’ve been doing this long enough that I know what they’re looking for, and I know I have ability to compete for a starting job in the NFL,” Martinez said. “They just want to see me go in there and make contact every time and make some solid kicks. It’s all about not having bad days. You just can’t have an off day in that league, and I think I’m that consistent.”
Former Iowa State kicker Tony Yelk will be replacing Martinez. Yelk and Martinez first met at a college kicking clinic and again at a Falcons training camp, where Tony shared a room with Lions receiver Troy Bergeron, a former Shaw standout. The three played together on a recreational softball team in Atlanta last year.
This Saturday night is “Military Appreciation Night” as anyone with a military ID badge receives a $6 ticket. Also the first 1000 fans receive a free Jimmy Johns sub coupon. Get their early for the tail-gate party sponsored by Circle K and Budweiser and join us afterwards for the post-game party at Buffalo Wild Wings where all military get Six FREE WINGS!!! See you in the Jungle this Saturday night.
