Columbus, GA (April 11, 2009) - Holding off a two point lead thanks to a missed field goal by Stampede field goal kicker Andy Eminger, the Columbus Lions (4-1) of the American Indoor Football Association nipped by the Harrisburg Stampede (1-3) 35-33 on Saturday night.
In a matchup that featured the number two scoring offense in the Columbus Lions taking on a Stampede defense that allows the fewest points scored per game, the game down to the wire with the Stampede set to take a one point lead if kicker Andy Eminger could make 30 yard field goal with :18 seconds left in the game. The Stampede defense lived up to the bill while the Lions offense struggled much of the night thanks to three turnovers.
Coming off their impressive showing from the last week, the Lions defense added to their league leading turnover turnover total with an interception by defensive back Damian Daniels and a fumble recovery by Franklin Lloyd holding the Stampede to only ten points in the second half.
Momentum took a swing in the Lions favor after a blocked field goal by defensive lineman Darin Damron and Mike Berry. "I knew the way the defense was playing I knew it would work for our offense to get back on the field and give them the opportunity to erase the 13 point deficit," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Our offense struggled but put points on the board when we needed them most."
At one point, the Stampede held a 13 point edge but Columbus scored ten points to close out the first half and went into the locker room down by three. AIFA Offensive Player of the Week running back Richard Fitzhugh scored two touchdowns with AIFA Special Teams Player of the Week kicker Carlos Martinez scoring 11 points.
The Columbus Lions will be back in the jungle on Saturday April 18th as the DC Armor will be coming to town for "Military Appreciation Night". To get great sponsorship deals, call the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN for more details.
