Summary:
Well this would be a lot easier if the Armor had kept stats for Saturday’s game. It also appears that no news outlet from Reading or D.C wrote a game summary so I am doing this off memory. The night started out well for the Armor with a defensive touchdown off a Rob Flowers dropped snap in Reading’s end zone. D.C would remain up by seven until the Express scored a touchdown but botched the extra point to remain down by one. The Armor had snap problems of there own as quarterback Mike Scipione fumbled the transition from center. Reading took advantage of the great field position (the Scipione fumble occurred at the D.C twenty) and scored again while missing the PAT. If memory serves me right both teams traded touchdowns before the half and Reading went into the locker room with at least a two score lead. My second half memory is a bit fuzzy. The crux of the game occurred on a D.C possession with time winding down. The Armor was down by two scores and had first and goal on Readings seven yard line with a minute thirty left. Needless to say D.C could not punch the ball in as the Express took over on downs and ran the clock out, scoring another touchdown in the process.
The Good:
This will be hard to come up with, at least Washington had indoor football for the first time since 1987. Also it appeared Linebacker Mike Woodhouse played one hell of a game. He was always around the ball on defense and filled in at kicker too.
The Bad:
Oh were to start, first at foremost the D.C Armory sucks. It might be the worse facility in the AIFA. I know a lot of people on this board rag on Huntington but the Armory makes the Big Sandy Arena seem like Yankee Stadium. The field was miss-marked as the referee continually had to line the ball out side of the hash marks. I have never seen an indoor game played with such huge dasher pad gaps. Seriously it looked like D.C had thrown black gym mats over the walls. The team set up two projection screens in each end zone but the picture was too small and no one could see what was playing. I swear it might have been the chain gangs first football game, the referee had to keep re-positioning them. The score board operator was on crack and continually let the clock run at inappropriate times. On the field Scipione had a rough outing. After seeing him for the first time it appears D.C’s quarterback has a slow trigger and is indecisive. Through out the game he tucked his passes after starting his throwing motion. On several occasions Scipione looked to have an open field in front of him but refused to run. The offensive line did not help matters as Scipione was rushed much of the game. I have to give some props to D.C’s defense; they were continually asked to defend a short field because of the offenses inability to move the ball and did an admirable job doing so. Again D.C was without a kicker as linebacker Mike Woodhouse handled that assignment. On a fourth down play from the Armors twenty coach Daniel James actually sent Woodhouse out to attempt a kick which was promptly blocked. Lastly the team kept no stats for the game.
How bad it was can be summed up in the following. There is no way I am going to spend $20 to see this abortion of indoor football. More than any one I want to see the Armor make it but at $20 it is not worth seeing. I will continue to follow the team and post any information I find but if the Armor can’t put on a better show for there fans I refuse to give them my business.
