COLUMBUS, GA (April 4, 2009) – After suffering their first loss of the season, the Columbus Lions (3-1) of the American Indoor Football Association rebounded in a big way on Saturday night defeating the Baltimore Mariners (2-2) 82-19.
The Lions offense came out of the gate quickly only needing two plays to get their first score as fullback Richard Fitzhugh scored on a 2 yard run. Led by Fitzhugh and his four touchdowns the Lions never surrendered the lead and scorched Mariners on their way to a 51-12 halftime lead.
Rookie quarterback Bill Ashburn rebounded from a tough Florence outing, finishing the night passing 10 of 17 for 4 touchdowns and 142 yards passing. Three Lions receivers combined for five touchdowns with Troy Bergeron leading the way grabbing 4 receptions for 73 yards and 3 touchdowns.
The defense put on a showcase as Baltimore QB’s never seemed to get comfortable due to pressure supplied by the Lions defensive front. The Lions finished with four sacks and collected eight turnovers. Both Ernest Nemeth and Matt Folke were a combined 10 of 41 passing including five interceptions with Lions linebacker Ryan Babb and safety Ramone Nickerson both collecting a pair of picks.
The Mariners only score of the 2nd half came on their first possession in the third quarter with QB Ernest Nemeth running it from the 1 yard line. Special teams for the Mariners did not fare well either as kicker J.R. Cipra finished the night 1 of 5 on field goal attempts with two of them being blocked by Lions linebacker Justen Rivers.
League leading kicker Carlos Martinez added to the scoring onslaught adding 16 points including five rouge kicks and eight extra points. “It’s not so much that we get the one point for an uno, its that Carlos forces teams to start their drive at their own five yard line,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “Baltimore always seemed like they were starting with tough field position and making it easy for our defense to supply the pressure.”
“This team was good and had an off day, it has happened to us,” continues Head Coach Jason Gibson. “We still turned the ball over too much and need to work on correcting some mistakes and get ready with a short week.”
Be sure to check out all of action as the Lions will be traveling up to take on the Harrisburg Stampede on April 11th. Log onto www.columbuslions.net and click on the Listen Live icon to follow all of your Columbus Lions as they will try and corral the Stampede.
