*Please note I did not attend this game*
Summary:
Coming off a weeks rest the D.C Armor traveled to Erie Pennsylvania Saturday night and defeated the River Rats for there first win in franchise history. D.C started the out fast as Ricky Simmons (6 – 96 – 2td) caught an eleven yard touchdown pass from Mike Scipione (19 – 31 261 yrds 4td 1int) on the Armors first drive. After the first touchdown both defenses dug in until Erie scored fourteen straight points to take a 14 – 8 lead in the second. The Armor offense quickly sprung back to life after falling behind, scoring three more touchdowns before half time on Scipione touchdown passes to Simmons and Marcus Hill (8-108-2td) along with an Ahmad Hawkins (1tkl 2ints) 43yrd missed field goal return. Coming into the third with a 26 – 14 lead it would take the Armor almost the entire quarter to score again as Scipione tossed his second touchdown pass to Hill with 1:05 left in the quarter. It would be the Armor’s last touchdown (Mike Woodhouse scored two points on a PAT return in the 4th) as Erie mounted a furious come back pulling within four points of D.C with less than four minutes left to play. With six seconds remaining in the game Erie had a chance to score but River Rats quarterback Markell Harrison threw an interception to Simmons for a D.C victory.
The Good:
Lets start with the most important player on the filed Mike Scipione who threw for over two hundred yards and four touchdowns after a rocky start in Reading last week. Scipione was aided by a great performance from his wide receiver core including Marcus Hill and Ricky Simmons. Even running back James Gibson contributed, rushing four times for forty five yards. Most of that coming on a thirty nine yard scamper. The secondary decided to show up, former AFL Bowl defensive MVP Ahmad Hawkins registered two interceptions and one was returned for six. Also registering an interception was Tynes Lyndon who returned it for six yards. The defensive line got to quarterback Markell Harrison five times, Mike Woodhouse, Bobby Payne, Marcus Robinson, and Dave Lewis all participated in taking down Harrison. Speaking of Woodhouse he also returned a PAT in the fourth quarter for the Armors last score. The Armor were only penalized three times which was a big improvement from there game in Reading.
The Bad:
First and foremost the Armor traveled to Erie without a kicker. I know this is the AIFA and guys have day jobs but it might be a good idea to have a few extra kickers on call for a situation like this. I find it odd that Randy Hymes after leading the Armor in receiving during week one played defensive back but not receiver. The offensive line had a rough outing while giving up seven sacks. After a relatively good game in Reading the o-line let Scipione get knock around but it did not disturb the quarterback as he had a great game. My last complaint is the lack of offensive production in the second half. After scoring four touchdowns in the first D.C could only muster one second half TD.
