COLUMBUS, GA (March 25, 2009) – On Saturday March 28th, the Columbus Lions (2-0) of the American Indoor Football Association take on the Florence Phantoms (1-1) the defending champs at the Florence Civic Center at 7:30 pm.
Columbus rolls into Florence hot off a two-game winning streak defeating the Carolina Speed in back-to-back weeks, while the Phantoms have had two weeks to prepare since they last defeated Harrisburg 19-13 back on March 13th.
The defending AIFA champions have had a difficult time finding the answer on offense as they have struggled to score 48 points in their first two games.
The Phantoms have been able to move the ball with some success but the red zone offense has been the main sore spot as they have only converted 1 of 9 opportunities for touchdowns. Penalties have also been a problem for the Phantoms as they top the league averaging 11 per game.
Things could change for Florence as they just resigned QB Omar Jacobs who guided the Phantoms to the AIFA 2008 Championship.
Led behind rookie quarterback Bill Ashburn, the Lions offense has been up and down with Ashburn only completing 50% of his passes in two games. “Our offensive schemes is a proven system, the more reps Bill continues to have success will follow,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson.
In their two wins over the Speed, the Lions defense dominated both second halves limiting the Speed to only two scores in combined games. Last week, the Lions forced 7 turnovers in their 68-37 win over Carolina.
“Their offense might be struggling, but their defense is really tough,” continues Head Coach Jason Gibson. “I expect this to be a real dog fight as I do the rest of our southern division games.”
