Lions Put Brakes on Speed
Columbus, GA (March 22, 2009) – Led by running back Richard Fitzhugh’s 4 touchdown night, the Columbus Lions (2-0) of the American Indoor Football Association avoiding falling into a speed trap by defeating the Carolina Speed (1-2) 68-37.
All-AIFA defensive back Damian Daniels two interception afternoon leading a Columbus defense that withheld the Speed’s offense to only one score in the second half which came in the waning moments of the game. Defensive end Maurice Jones pitched in with an 11-yard fumble recovery returning it for a score and also collecting a safety.
Newcomer and Columbus native Troy Bergeron was the main target for quarterback Bill Ashburn collecting 10 receptions, 61 yards and two touchdowns. Ashburn finished the night completing 17 of 38 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
Last week’s AIFA Offensive Player of the Week wide receiver Josh Smith never seemed to find his way into the Carolina game plan as he finished the night with one catch for 12 yards. The Speed could not find a way to limit there mistakes committing 15 penalties and turning the ball over 7 times.
“It was great to see our defense carry the second half performance from last week’s game into today’s game,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “We will be extremely tough to beat if we continue to play at this level.”
The Columbus Lions will take on another division foe next week as they travel to take on the Florence Phantoms on Saturday March 28th. Be sure to go to www.columbuslions.net and click on the Listen Live icon to catch all the Lions action.
